ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • After a house fire was reported just after sunrise Monday in Robeson Township, the Geigertown chief and three firefighters entered a burning home without air tanks to rescue three people and were hospitalized for smoke inhalation while two residents died, and officials said their action was spurred by a deadly fire less than three weeks ago (which killed a 34-year-old woman and her father).  Reading Eagle

CRIME NEWS

  • Officers responded on April 28th at 2:30 p.m. to a call about human remains found near Route 176 in Cumru Township—investigators confirmed the remains are in advanced decomposition and believed to be female before transporting them for further analysis.  Berks Weekly

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Foundation for the Reading Pagoda is asking residents to share ideas on how to sustain and use the historic landmark during its renovations through an online survey. The survey, which began gathering suggestions last year, will help shape a six-month strategic plan addressing capacity, safety, and long-term maintenance for the Pagoda.  Reading Eagle
  • Genesius Theatre in Reading will present Raisin from May 2 to May 11 with performances at 7:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. The musical features live music from a 16-piece orchestra and an all-Black cast — it also offers a Park/Dinner/Shuttle/Show program with DoubleTree.  Berks Weekly

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Two candidates—Acting Sheriff Mandy Miller with 25 years of service and retired Reading police officer Chris Rothermel with 27 years on the force—are running in the May 20 primary to serve the remaining two years of the vacancy left by Eric Weaknecht.  Reading Eagle
  • State officials announced that Wernersville Community Corrections Center in South Heidelberg Township will close on May 12 — ending its operations after housing parolees and employing about 50 people.  WFMZ-TV

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Reading’s historic Stirling Guest House at 1120 Centre Ave is for sale at $1.2 million as its owner, Cesar Gonzales, who bought the 19th century mansion with his partners in 2019, now plans to focus on his young adopted children in the Philippines and other family projects. The property, used for community events and charitable work, has been a local hub for meetings and gatherings.  Reading Eagle
