COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents decorated The Heritage of Green Hills in Cumru Township today to embrace the holiday season; community members including Ann Fisher, Diane Kelly, and Dee Levengood worked together to create a festive atmosphere.  Reading Eagle
  • Families gathered at The Salvation Army in Reading for a holiday event featuring games and crafts. Organizers said this second annual celebration gives community members a chance to connect during the festive season.  WFMZ-TV
  • YMCA of Reading & Berks County was awarded a grant from YMCA of the USA to expand its pickleball program at Sinking Spring YMCA. The Y will add a hybrid court and hold an open house & racquet sports night on Friday, Jan. 9 to meet rising community demand.  Berks Weekly
  • Hospitalized children and their families will receive free holiday gifts this Christmas to brighten the season. The local initiative brings cheer to area hospitals.  WFMZ-TV
  • Jordan and Janelle, whose family faces financial stress after a work injury and loss of income, are receiving help from the Operation Holiday program to provide food and gifts this season. The long-running program has partnered with local agencies to support families in need.  Reading Eagle

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Two new Jersey Mike's Subs locations are set to open soon: one at 200 Shoemaker Road in Pottstown, ready in January or February 2026 with a team of about 18 to 20, and another in Exeter Township at a 2,000 sqft space with an opening expected in early May.  Reading Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kutztown University will host the 2026 Berks County Science Olympiad on Thursday, Jan. 8 (snow date Jan. 12) where more than 300 high school students from 19 schools will compete in STEM events.  Reading Eagle
  • At Redner’s Event Center at FirstEnergy Stadium on Monday, Dec. 22, the Reading Police Academy honored its 35 graduating cadets from the city and surrounding agencies with remarks by Mayor Eddie Moran. Eight cadets will soon join the local police department while the rest serve regional forces.  Reading Eagle

SPORTS NEWS

  • Alvernia University named former Ursinus defensive coordinator Steve Devlin as its head football coach Tuesday, following an 0-10 season. Devlin, known for his Philadelphia coaching success, will build the program with his deep regional ties & a focus on student-athlete development.  Reading Eagle
  • Today, two high school football players from Berks County were named to the Pennsylvania Football Writers’ Class 3A All-State Team. Berks Catholic junior Faith Zudie is recognized as a defensive lineman & Schuylkill Valley senior Logan Commauf was chosen as a linebacker.  Reading Eagle
  • Reading High's boys basketball team won 72-51 over Exeter on Monday night as Jostin DeCastro scored 23 points and the team built an early lead to secure the win.  Reading Eagle
  • Four local Berks players, including three from Exeter and Muhlenberg's Cameron Small, were named to the Pennsylvania Football Writers’ Class 5A All-State Team Tuesday. Their selection recognizes standout season performances that boosted key offensive and defensive numbers.  Reading Eagle
