COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Muhlenberg Township Police will run their annual holiday food drive on Friday at Sam's Club in Temple (8 to 11 a.m.) and at BJ’s Wholesale Club in Hyde Park (11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.), accepting donations only during these hours.  Reading Eagle
  • Exeter Township firefighters joined other volunteers on Dec. 4 at Boscov’s East to help 20 students shop for holiday gifts with a firefighter - the event also had NorthStar United Methodist Church, state Sen. Judy Schwank, Rep. Mark Gillen, and Santa, and was followed by a meal shared by crews.  Reading Eagle
  • United Way of Berks County closed its 100th anniversary celebration with a time capsule ceremony today in Reading. Local officials and volunteers sealed mementos and letters in a capsule while planting a white oak tree to honor longtime volunteer Irv Evans and plan for the next 100 years.  WFMZ-TV
  • Montgomery County father Spencer lost his maintenance job and now faces hard choices, but faith, his wife, landlord & a supportive case manager help keep his 6-year-old daughter safe and thriving. The family will ease holiday costs with gift and grocery cards from Operation Holiday, a long-running program for local families.  Reading Eagle
  • After a snowstorm postponed last week’s schedule, Helping Harvest's Mobile Market will run Monday at 11 a.m. at Mrs. T’s Pierogies on Herald Road in Shenandoah. The program serves 160 families and 350 agencies in Berks and Schuylkill counties (11 million pounds of food are distributed yearly).  WFMZ-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • High school students in Berks, Carbon, Lehigh, Monroe, and Northampton counties painted 15 snowplows to promote safe winter driving and showcase their artistic skills. Voting is open online from Dec. 8 through Dec. 14 and winners will be announced later this month.  WFMZ-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students from middle school to college met at the Berks County Intermediate Unit (111 Commons Blvd., Muhlenberg Township) on Friday, Dec. 5 to adapt 70 plush toys for children with disabilities. The project offered hands-on engineering experience during the third annual Toy Adaptation Day.  Reading Eagle
  • The Berks County Football Coaches Association released its All-Academic Team for 2025, honoring starters and key special teams players who earned at least a 3.0 GPA in the first quarter. The list features players from local schools (including Berks Catholic, Conrad Weiser, Reading, and others).  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Towamencin supervisor Kofi Osei declared his candidacy for state Senate in the 24th District, challenging incumbent Tracy Pennycuick and promising community-led government in Harrisburg. His platform focuses on protecting public utilities, boosting affordable housing and expanding transit for residents in Montgomery and Berks counties.  Reading Eagle

SPORTS NEWS

  • Peter Kelfalla scored 22 points as Wilson defeated Abington 69-57 on Saturday in a high school boys basketball game. Local teams also enjoyed wins, with Muhlenberg edging Methacton 60-57 and Exeter outscoring Pottsgrove 66-39.  Reading Eagle
  • Skiers and snowboarders enjoy natural powder and icy conditions at Bear Creek Mountain Resort in Longswamp Township today, hoping for a long and fun winter season. Participants say the resort's terrain park and varied trails offer an exciting challenge despite the biting cold.  WFMZ-TV
