COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Reading Fire Department will host its annual toy drive breakfast on Dec. 19 at Trooper Thorn’s Irish Beef House—community members must donate a new, unwrapped toy to get a free breakfast starting at 7 a.m. The event honors retired firefighter Keith “Sarge” Eschleman, and all collected toys will go to the Salvation Army of Reading to help local families.  Reading Eagle
  • Crews in West Reading are finishing holiday decorations for a tree lighting event set for Friday—marking the start of local seasonal celebrations.  WFMZ-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • AAA research shows that 46% of weather-related crashes occurred in colder months. Today, winter weather advisories across parts of PA and NJ warn drivers to slow down due to mixed precipitation and possible snow accumulations up to six inches — conditions that could make morning commutes hazardous.  WFMZ-TV

FINANCE NEWS

  • A new report shows that residents in Pennsylvania now need an annual income of $94,262 for a single adult to live comfortably—almost twice the state's median personal income of $47,864. Families of two adults and one child must earn about $175,814, and the report uses the 50/30/20 rule to highlight rising costs in housing, groceries, and child care—pressuring households across the state.  WFMZ-TV
  • Treasurer Stacy Garrity announced a new partnership with Gift of College — digital gift cards can now be used to fund PA 529 and PA ABLE accounts. This option gives families a simple way to help save for college and disability costs during the holiday season.  WFMZ-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • At The Inn at Centre Park, community members gathered Monday night for World AIDS Day and to mark 40 years of Co-County Wellness Services. The event honored 575 local lives lost to HIV — and city hall was lit red to recognize the occasion.  WFMZ-TV
  • Jane, a single mom who had 18 back surgeries and whose son faces mental health challenges and was born with a skull defect, has long struggled to cover basic needs with disability checks and SNAP benefits. Operation Holiday, now in its 35th year, will help 199 local families with food and holiday gifts — a program funded entirely by reader contributions.  Reading Eagle

SPORTS NEWS

  • Twin Valley and Southern Lehigh will face off in the PIAA Class 4A championship final at 7 p.m. Thursday at Chapman Field — both teams making their first appearance with Twin Valley holding a 14-0 record.  Reading Eagle
  • The Wilson Bulldogs opened their girls basketball season Saturday with a 51-46 overtime win over Emmaus — Kailani Hardy scored 21 points and Jade Lee added 8, while Conrad Weiser also began their season with a 42-28 win over Blue Mountain. These results kicked off the weekend's high school basketball action across Berks.  Reading Eagle
  • The Kutztown high school girls basketball team opened its season with a one-point win over Shenandoah Valley on Monday. Junior guard Riley Derstine scored a career-high 21 points while teammate Kaitlyn Houptley added 10 with a key three-pointer in the final quarter.  Reading Eagle
  • Andrew Derstine’s foul shot with 2.1 seconds left — a key play that capped a six-point rally — gave Boyertown a win over Conrad Weiser in the season opener. The Bears, who led with a game-high 21 points, will try for a second win tonight at Pennridge.  Reading Eagle
