COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Meredith, a 38-year-old single mother on dialysis, lost her job after a severe bout with COVID and now faces mounting bills and daily challenges to care for her children. Operation Holiday will help her and nearly 200 local families get food and gifts for the upcoming holidays—support provided by local agencies and community donations.  Reading Eagle
  • PG Enterprises hosted its 17th annual Christmas tree sale and vendor show on Saturday in Douglassville, where owner Janet Farley explained the event began as a cherished family tradition. Santa also visited the show to greet local attendees.  WFMZ-TV
  • On Nov. 29, shoppers gathered in West Reading for Small Business Saturday as local shops hosted festive events on Penn Avenue. Local business owners said the event helped support the neighborhood and build community ties.  Reading Eagle
  • Discovery Federal Credit Union recently concluded its coat drive—collecting over 50 coats and winter gear for clients at the Pennsylvania Adult & Teen Challenge and the Naaman Network to support their recovery. The drive was extended by a week to allow for additional donations.  Reading Eagle

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Business Weekly Agenda shows a list of events for local entrepreneurs starting Dec. 5th at B2 Bistro in West Reading and continuing with learning sessions at Berks LaunchBox in Reading, a meeting for mothers and a family business seminar in Wyomissing, holiday gatherings, and a Money Smarts workshop in Reading — these events aim to build skills and connections. An HR group also meets every second Tuesday to share useful ideas with local professionals.  Reading Eagle

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Miller Center for the Arts will host a holiday concert on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. as Peter White performs with Mindi Abair and Vincent Ingala for the annual Berks Jazz Fest—an event offering smooth jazz renditions of classic Christmas songs to local fans.  Reading Eagle
  • Charles C. Hofmann—who came to Reading from Germany in 1860—worked as a painter who captured almshouse and farm scenes along the Schuylkill River in the 1800s. His bright, simple works for local patrons softened the harsh image of poorhouse life and are now displayed in major museums.  Reading Eagle
  • Irish acoustic band Lunasa will perform at Kutztown University’s Schaeffer Auditorium Friday at 7:30 p.m. — the band, formed in 1997 and known for touring worldwide, will feature guest vocalist Dave Curley and include winter and holiday tunes.  Reading Eagle

HEALTH NEWS

  • Fred Beans Automotive Group donated $30,000 during October to benefit Unite for HER and PA Breast Cancer Coalition by splitting funds evenly from vehicle sales and service bills—supporting local women with breast and ovarian cancer efforts—and receiving a Community Partner Award for its contributions.  Reading Eagle

  • The Berks County recorder of deeds office posted real estate transfers for today showing sale prices such as a $550,000 deal at Pricetown Road and other deals with no money exchanged—these records are public and update as filings are processed.  Reading Eagle

SPORTS NEWS

  • Kutztown beat Assumption 56-19 at Andre Reed Stadium Saturday afternoon to keep their perfect season and set a new record with 13 wins. They will face Frostburg State on December 6, and head coach Jim Clements praised his team’s focus—quarterback Judd Novak scored six touchdowns to drive the Golden Bears into the quarterfinals.  Reading Eagle
