- ➤ Reading organizations are hosting Thanksgiving giveaways to help families in need this Thursday by offering turkeys, food, toiletries and other essentials. One Luv Outreach is serving about 140 families while Rehoboth Seventh-Day Adventist Church is distributing holiday items — a joint effort with Helping Harvest designed to brighten the holiday — with more events planned in the city later this week. - ➤ Jess—a local mom in Telford—finished a food course at Manna on Main Street this summer and is now looking for a job in food to help her family with high costs, car troubles, and benefit cuts. She said she only wants to give her son a happy Christmas and Operation Holiday will help local families get food and gifts for the holidays. Reading Eagle
- ➤ United Way of Berks County exceeded its donation goal by raising over $11 million at a victory celebration held Thursday at Redner’s Event Center at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading. The funds will support health and human service programs for 190,000 local people — including Meals on Wheels, tutoring, and safe community programs. Reading Eagle
- ➤ 69 WFMZ-TV and the Reading Royals will host a coat drive on December 14 at Santander Arena from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.+ volunteers will assist donors in dropping off new and gently used coats for the Reading School District’s Knights' Closet to help students in need while donors receive a $5 discount ticket for the Royals game. - ➤ Berks County Coroner’s Office reported that 93-year-old Elizabeth Brewer died Friday night after driving wrong-way on 222 in Muhlenberg Township when she hit a tractor trailer—officials urge families to check on elderly drivers as holiday travel begins. WFMZ-TV

- ➤ Berks Ballet Theatre held a Sugar Plum Fairy Tea Party at GoggleWorks Center for the Arts on November 24 as a preview for its upcoming performance of The Nutcracker. - ➤ AAA projects that 81.8 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home for Thanksgiving from today until Dec. 1, with 73 million driving and 6 million expected to fly; flight cancellations may prompt more drivers. The Pennsylvania Turnpike will suspend construction and maintenance from 5 a.m. today until 11 p.m. on Nov. 30—drivers should plan for congestion and shifting weather. Reading Eagle

- ➤ Alvernia University reported a 12% rise in fall enrollment to 2,866 students and its highest first-year retention rates in nearly a decade—gains that include a 9-point boost for first-generation students and marked improvements for students of color. The university also saw strong enrollment growth in online, graduate and adult programs along with a 40% rise in interest from first-year and transfer students during its latest recruitment cycle. - ➤ This Saturday, November 29th, Pennsylvania will open its firearms deer season — running until December 13th and including hunting on two Sundays, November 30th and December 7th. - ➤ Electric bills for PPL, Met-Ed and PECO customers will rise on Dec. 1 as the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission sets higher default electricity prices—ranging from 3.7% to 8.9%—for those who do not competitively shop for suppliers. PPL has also proposed a separate 7% annual base rate increase that will be reviewed at public hearings in December. Reading Eagle
