- ➤ Gourmand Cafe and JPrutzman Enterprises are collecting donations until Nov. 21 to give $200 Shillington Grocery Outlet gift cards to Berks County families in need this Thanksgiving season. For every $189.99 donated, a gift card is provided—families may also receive cards from Gourmand Cafe and Berks Deals & Steals to help strengthen support in the community. Reading Eagle
- ➤ Today, Best Friends Animal Society recognized the Animal Rescue League of Berks County as a no-kill shelter after it achieved a 90% save rate in 2024— the shelter improved from a 50% save rate when it adopted its no-kill policy in 2018. WFMZ-TV
- ➤ On November 14, a veterans luncheon in Reading raised $1.4 million for programs and scholarships to help veterans, with local businesses and groups funding the event. - ➤ Alvernia University has launched a new Banking and Financial Services Academy — a two-year program designed with regional bank executives to train emerging and mid-level finance leaders in areas such as commercial lending, treasury, credit, and operations. The program features both in-person and online modules with executive mentorship, offers participants credits toward an MBA, and charges $10,000 per year for up to three emerging leaders at each institution. - ➤ At Twin Valley Middle School, 7th graders baked and packaged over 7,000 cookies in 27 boxes at the 25th Annual Cookie Bake to support U.S. military service members. Community and parent volunteers helped mix dough and raised more than 1080 dollars through cookie coupon sales to fund Keystone Military Families. Reading Eagle

- ➤ The Berks County Conservation District received a $317,872 state grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection on Tuesday to improve water quality in Bethel Township’s Upper Little Swatara Creek watershed by restoring Crosskill Creek’s banks and installing agricultural best practices on a tributary—one of eight statewide projects focused on restoring impaired waters. - ➤ UGI Utilities Inc. added $500,000 to the Operation Share Energy Fund to help customers pay heating bills—raising its year-to-date contribution to $1.7 million. The company said the extra funds come as delayed federal LIHEAP payments have left customers in immediate need. Reading Eagle

- ➤ Pagoda lights remain on after a successful test Monday night of a new LED system that is part of the landmark's $5.3 million renovation project—funded by American Rescue Plan funds and city capital improvement dollars—to prepare the building for Christmas Eve lighting and a public reopening expected in mid-April. - ➤ Residents in Kenhorst and Reading’s 18th Ward were told to boil water after a water main broke Monday night on the 500 block of Lancaster Avenue. The Reading Area Water Authority repaired the break and said testing will continue before the advisory is lifted in about three days. Reading Eagle
- ➤ Human Relations Commission Director Kimberly Talbot told City Council that her small team is struggling to meet rising calls for help with housing and utility bills, fair housing issues and discrimination complaints as strict federal guidelines limit aid and COVID-19 funds expire in July. She said her office helped 168 homeowners with nearly $133,000 in funds and provided about $98,000 in rental and utility aid to 43 households — while planning to add bilingual staff and a new outreach role.
