COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Three nonprofits—The Camel Project, Bethany Children's Home and Green Building Alliance—hosted a forum Saturday at GoggleWorks in Berks County to address youth gun violence. Leaders discussed hard topics, including racism and bullying, and invited every elected official and nonprofit to join efforts to spark change.  WFMZ-TV
  • People in Berks County walked in solidarity to mark Youth Homeless Awareness Month at the Reading Public Museum Arboretum. The event—hosted by Berks Coalition to End Homelessness—aimed to boost support for young people facing housing insecurity.  WFMZ-TV

  • Safe Berks named Dimitrios Aletras Jr. as director of development to lead the 50-year celebration after replacing Mindy McIntosh on Nov. 6 — he brings 20 years of experience from major companies including Airbnb. Meanwhile, Tompkins Financial Advisors announced that Geoff Blyth will retire early 2026 and the firm will soon begin its search for a successor — his 30-year career guided the firm's investment strategy.  Reading Eagle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Blues musician Charlie Apicella will perform Ma Rainey’s Living Tradition of the Blues at the Reading Blues Fest on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the DoubleTree by Hilton Reading Grand Ballroom—he and his band will play classic blues tunes and explain Ma Rainey’s legacy while day-pass tickets cost $125.  Reading Eagle
  • Berks Ballet Theatre celebrates its 50th anniversary with a milestone production of The Nutcracker on Dec. 20 and 21 at Kutztown University’s Schaeffer Auditorium—featuring updated choreography, new costumes, live music by the Reading Pops Orchestra, and the return of alumna Jessica Bealer as the Sugar Plum Fairy. A Sugar Plum Fairy Tea Party is scheduled for next Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts, and tickets start at $43.  Reading Eagle
  • Several churches in Berks County are hosting special events this week—today, St. Andrew’s United Church of Christ at 1320 Spruce St. holds a fall food sale from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.—while other churches plan holiday bazaars, guest talks and community meals over the coming days.  Reading Eagle

  • Diabetes Awareness Month stresses the need for early eye exams to catch diabetic eye conditions—such as retinopathy, cataracts, and glaucoma—before they lead to serious vision loss. Patients with diabetes are advised to manage their blood sugar and schedule regular exams at local providers like SightMD Pennsylvania to help protect their sight.  Reading Eagle

  • The Berks County recorder of deeds office released real estate transactions recorded today that show many property transfers with a wide range of prices — some sales had no money exchanged.   • The Berks Catholic Saints lost 17–0 to Trinity in the District 3 Class 3A championship game at ELCO High School in Myerstown on Friday—Coach Dave Stahler praised his players for their effort despite the score—and the team will work hard to bounce back next season.  Reading Eagle
  • Kutztown University won its third straight PSAC championship on Saturday at Andre Reed Stadium after defeating IUP 28-23 — marking the first three-peat in the conference since the 1970s. Coach Jim Clements praised his team, and quarterback Judd Novak said key plays helped secure the win as the Golden Bears move into the NCAA Division II playoffs.  Reading Eagle
