COMMUNITY NEWS

  • LightHouse Women & Children’s Center held a ribbon cutting Thursday at 715 N. Sixth Street in Reading as it celebrated a new playground with poured-in-place rubber surfacing and accessible equipment—The event also introduced Alvernia University’s Sanctuary in Color Project featuring community art created with local children.  Berks Weekly
  • The NAACP Veterans of Reading hosted its 4th annual dinner to honor local veterans and share information on benefits like mental and financial help. The event featured church memorabilia and light refreshments — a gesture to support veterans who might not seek help on their own.  WFMZ-TV
  • Safe Berks announced on November 6 that Mindy McIntosh stepped down as Director of Development after eight years of service. The organization will name her replacement next week and is directing outreach through Madison Cooper—the current contact for all queries.  Berks Weekly
  • Berks County reopened Stonecliffe Recreation Area today after the City of Reading finished its Stonecliffe Phase 1 Sewer Force Main Project + the adjoining Union Canal/Schuylkill River Trail is also open; visitors should park in the newly available Columbia Street Parking Lot and note that the Action Park skatepark and fishing pier are closed while future safety and renovation plans are reviewed.  Berks Weekly
  • The West Reading-Wyomissing Rotary Club honored Suzanne Cody of Muhlenberg Greene Architects with the People of Action Award as Paul Harris Fellow for her work on the Help a Girl Out initiative that supports local women and girls—she expressed thanks for the club's recognition.  Berks Weekly
  • This weekend a Scouting for Food drive collected 55,000 pounds of food for Helping Harvest Fresh Food Bank and thousands of Scouts helped fill shelves to support families in need in Reading.  WFMZ-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Kutztown University announced five finalists for its Business Idea Competition—students from various disciplines will pitch innovative ideas before experienced entrepreneurs—and the finalists retain full ownership of their proposals. Final presentations will be held on Nov. 19 in Room 101 of de Francesco—cash awards of $1,000, $750, and $500 will go to the top finishers—and professionals will provide valuable feedback.  Berks Weekly
  • Gage Talent & Business Solutions celebrated 40 years as a family-run firm from West Reading and announced Kristi Gage Linderman as its new CEO this year. The company, founded in 1985 by Donna Gage, has grown through three generations by providing recruiting and staffing services in the local community.  Reading Eagle
  • The Greater Berks Development Fund has secured a $2,000,000 PIDA loan from Truist Bank for BRM Real Estate so Bally Ribbon Mills can buy a 126,884-square-foot facility—this financing supports the manufacturer’s plan to improve efficiency and continue its growth in Berks County.  Berks Weekly

CULTURE NEWS

  • Wyomissing United Church of Christ celebrated 175 years as a congregation and 140 years in its historic building today—Reverend William Worley led a worship service where members reflected on the past and shared hopes for the future.  WFMZ-TV
  • Daniel Boone Homestead will host its annual A Homestead Holiday on December 7 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors will enjoy old Christmas customs—guided tours, crafts, demonstrations, and visits from Santa Claus and Belsnickel—at the historic site that shows nearly 300 years of tradition.  Berks Weekly

  • Berks Nature announced Tami Shimp as its new president to succeed Kim Murphy, who led the organization for 21 years. Shimp, who has worked there for nearly 30 years, will start her role on December 12th—she plans to build on its mission.  Berks Weekly

HEALTH NEWS

  • More than 300 students at Wyomissing Area Junior-Senior High School learned Hands-Only CPR from the American Heart Association and Penn State Health to boost their confidence in saving lives during a cardiac emergency. The training, led by Dr. John Breinholt and volunteer instructors, gave students a chance to practice the steps that could double or triple a victim’s chances of survival — making them future lifesavers.  Berks Weekly
  • Federal and state health officials said Saturday they began investigating 13 cases of infant botulism after infants in 10 states, including Pennsylvania, were hospitalized from consuming Whole Nutrition Infant Formula by ByHeart Inc. The formula, linked to lots 206VABP/251261P2 and 206VABP/251131P2 — the FDA is checking the cause while no deaths have been reported, is sold through major retailers.  Reading Eagle

SPORTS NEWS

  • Oley Valley advanced to the semifinals of the PIAA Class 1A field hockey tournament after winning 4-1 against Faith Christian at Perkiomen Valley High School on Saturday. They will play Susquenita, who beat Lake Lehman 1-0 last Saturday, on Tuesday, and the semifinal winners will meet for the state title on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 11 a.m.  Reading Eagle
