COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A new playground has been built at LightHouse Women & Children’s Center in Reading—children at the shelter will soon enjoy swings and slides outside their window. Executive Director Kate Alley said the center will hold a ribbon cutting soon and plans to build more transitional housing for families in need.  WFMZ-TV
  • Members 1st Federal Credit Union is donating $2,500 to each food bank in its 11 counties—totaling $27,500—in response to a federal government shutdown that is delaying SNAP benefits.  Reading Eagle
  • Stonecliffe Recreation Area in Reading reopened Wednesday afternoon after sewer work finished and the 15-acre park had been closed since March—county officials noted that the skatepark remains closed for future renovations, the Monroe Street lot is unavailable, and the fishing pier was closed after water changes from the dam removal.  Reading Eagle
  • The Berks County Visitors Bureau unveiled a new look and a new name — Experience Reading and Berks County — with a logo that shows the Pagoda, a hawk, and a train during a ceremony on Thursday morning at Franklin Station Brewpub in Reading. President and CEO Heather Zimmerman said the rebranding will help share local stories to attract more visitors to the region.  WFMZ-TV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A windstorm hit Berks County Wednesday night as large trees fell on cars and houses, trapping residents (including a family on Stoner Avenue and a woman rescued from a collapsed ceiling) while fire crews and township workers responded to about 12 calls (with one firefighter sustaining a minor injury) and fixed damaged street lights and utilities.  WFMZ-TV
  • A Bern Township family escaped safely from their home at 6 Homestead Drive when strong winds fanned discarded fireplace ashes into a blaze that destroyed the house late Wednesday—firefighters later estimated damage could exceed $750,000.  Reading Eagle

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Wyomissing-based PENN Entertainment reported third quarter earnings and ended its online sports betting deal with ESPN after three years, with ESPN starting a new deal with Draft Kings. PENN will rebrand its online sports betting as theScore Bet (set to begin on December 1) and shift its digital focus to strengthen its iCasino and regional casino business.  WFMZ-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Exeter Township Senior High staged 'Murder’s in the Heir!' on Nov 6 and will host shows on Nov 8 at 7 p.m. and Nov 9 at 2 p.m. at its auditorium in Reading—an interactive play where the audience votes on the killer.  Reading Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in Albany Township received a $5,000 grant from the M&T Charitable Foundation to support its weekend education programs—featuring live raptor displays and hands-on activities during the spring and fall migrations.  Reading Eagle

  • Five Berks football teams remain in the race this weekend as District 3 games continue with key matchups on Friday and Saturday. Exeter will play away while Wilson, Twin Valley, Wyomissing and Berks Catholic host games—each contest is crucial for advancing to the playoffs.  Reading Eagle
  • Conrad Weiser boys soccer will travel to Mansion Park in Altoona at 5 p.m. Saturday to face Franklin Regional in a rematch of last year’s quarterfinal match—while Oley Valley field hockey will face Faith Christian at noon Saturday at Perkiomen Valley after winning 5 to 0 in the first round.  Reading Eagle
