COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Victor and Dena Hammel have been named to chair Centro Hispano’s 2025 fundraising campaign in Reading (Nov. 15 to Dec. 31) and will lead efforts to support programs for the Latino community.  Reading Eagle

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Greenlight Networks announced on November 3rd that it entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Pennsylvania-based FastBridge Fiber—whose network spans areas in Pennsylvania and New York. The deal is set to close in mid-2026 and builds on its recent purchase of Loop Internet.  WFMZ-TV
  • A lottery retailer in Exeter Township sold a million-dollar Powerball ticket for the November 1 drawing (matching five white balls but not the red Powerball). The GIANT Food Store (located in the 4600 block of Perkiomen Avenue) received a $5,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.  WFMZ-TV
  • A Pennsylvania Lottery retailer in Exeter Township sold a Powerball ticket during Saturday's drawing that matched five white balls 2-26-43-44-62 to win $1 million even though it missed the red Powerball 22. Giant Food Stores (4655 Perkiomen Ave.) will receive a $5,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.  Reading Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Yesterday, the Antietam School District started steel construction of the new Stony Creek Elementary School on the site of the former middle-high school—beginning a project for kindergarten to third grade that is set to open in the 2027-28 school year—marking a fresh start after severe flood damage.  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Shapiro Administration released a fact sheet that showed nearly 2 million Pennsylvanians, including more than 713000 children, lost SNAP benefits starting Nov 1 because of the government shutdown — a list of local food pantries in Reading and nearby areas was provided to help affected families.  WFMZ-TV
  • The Combined Veterans Council of Berks County will hold its annual Veterans Day ceremony at Veterans Grove in City Park on November 11 at 11 a.m.—retired Army chief warrant officer Will Tobin, now deputy director of the Department of Veterans Affairs, will speak.  Reading Eagle

HEALTH NEWS

  • Berks food safety inspectors found an ice machine with black residue and another that was not clean to sight and touch during inspections from Oct. 15 to Oct. 28—violations that raise concerns over food facility sanitation.  Reading Eagle

SPORTS NEWS

  • Several Berks teams kick off November playoffs with key matches scheduled this week. Conrad Weiser boys soccer starts its state title quest today at 7 p.m.—other teams in football, volleyball, field hockey, and boys soccer are set to compete in District 3 contests.  Reading Eagle
  • The fall turkey season opened Nov. 1 in most Wildlife Management Units while WMUs 5C and 5D remain closed, so local hunters must travel upstate for a chance to hunt turkeys. Officials urge hunters to report their harvests within 10 days and follow safety steps—like using gloves and separate clothing—to help reduce disease risks.  Reading Eagle
