COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way of Berks County released an online guide to help residents facing SNAP delays, income loss, and other stresses amid the budget impasse and government shutdown. The guide lists contacts for food, housing, utility, mental health, and child care support & highlights services such as PA 211 with bilingual specialists.  Reading Eagle
  • West Lawn United Methodist Church will offer free community breakfasts at Raffauf Community Center (101 Woodside Ave., West Lawn) every Sunday from 9 to 11 a.m. until March 29 as more than 60 volunteers prepare pancakes, sausage and beverages for local neighbors.  Reading Eagle
  • On October 30, 2025, Alvernia University’s Residence Hall Association hosted its annual Trunk-or-Treat at Bernardine Hall—drawing over 250 local community members. Students and campus partners supported the event—providing festive decor, special fall food, and volunteer service hours.  Alvernia University
  • Beginning Sunday, Carsonia Park Bar & Grill will serve free kids’ meals on Sundays and Wednesdays to families who show a SNAP card and valid ID—helping to feed families as SNAP benefits pause. Local nonprofits also join the effort to deliver healthy meals in Berks.  WFMZ-TV

  • Reform Congregation Oheb Sholom will host its annual Jewish Food and Cultural Festival this weekend—offering traditional food and cultural presentations for local attendees.  WFMZ-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sen. Chris Gebhard hosted a ceremony today to rename a section of PA Route 183—extending from Mount Pleasant Road to the southbound bridge over Licking Creek—in honor of Staff Sgt. Norman Reifsnyder, a local World War II veteran recognized by legislation signed in June.  Berks Weekly
  • Gov. Josh Shapiro made $5 million available for Pennsylvania food banks through Feeding Pennsylvania on Friday to help keep SNAP benefits running amid the government shutdown. Federal judges ordered SNAP funds to continue using contingency dollars while the USDA planned a freeze of benefits on Saturday—raising concerns that aid could be delayed.  Reading Eagle

  • On Halloween night, the Exeter Eagles beat Lower Dauphin Falcons 35-0 in the first round of District 3 Class 5A playoffs at Reiffton—Riley Martinez returned to quarterback after an injury and the team will now face Conestoga Valley in a rematch.
