COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Michael Fitzgerald is hosting the 21st Fitzy’s Halloween Run at West Reading Playground at 505 Sycamore Road to honor his daughter Lauren—an event that will feature a free trick or treat dash, costume contests, food trucks, a kids zone, and a 5K run with about 500 participants expected. The run, organized by Lauren’s Foundation and directed by his wife Sorita of Fleet Feet, will support community programs and scholarships for families facing serious illnesses.  Berks Weekly
  • Pendora Park held its 5th annual trunk or treat event where families enjoyed treats (no tricks) and decorated vehicles in a safe community setting. Organizers noted that the event has grown each year and continues to bring neighbors together.  WFMZ-TV
  • Seven military veterans were inducted into the Berks County Military Hall of Fame after county commissioners accepted their nominations at a Thursday meeting — bringing the total to 87. The inductees will be honored at the Veterans Appreciation Dinner and Dance on November 8.  Reading Eagle

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Demolition work is underway at the former Manderbach Ford on N. 5th Street Highway in Muhlenberg Township—crews are preparing the site for a new Wawa that will add a car wash. A PennDOT traffic study recommended a left turn arrow and flashing light on the northbound lane to improve safety near the new location.  WFMZ-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Berks History Center invites locals to view Eagle Eyes: The Times of Our Lives in News Photos Through Six Decades on November 6 at 5:30 p.m. with a light-supper and on November 7 at 10:30 a.m. with coffee and donuts. The program shows about 100 photos from local papers spanning a six-decade period and features a panel discussion with photographers and historians.  Berks Weekly
  • The Berks Military History Museum is expanding to build a new Holocaust museum that will display exhibits, survivor stories and offer local school partnerships. Community leaders and state Rep. Mark Gillen toured the space on Thursday — they said the privately funded project will cost about $3.5 million and serve as a reminder of past hate.  WFMZ-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Pennsylvania Public Utilities Commission said it will investigate PPL’s proposed rate hike that could raise bills by about 7% for some residential customers — the investigation suspends the increase for up to seven months and will include public hearings before a final decision is made by July 1.  Reading Eagle

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Council on Chemical Abuse in Reading offers programs for people with gambling problems and warns that gambling can harm mental health. Director Marcia Goodman-Hinnershitz said the services include an evidence-based prevention program—Teens and Technology—and advice to call 1-800-GAMBLER for help.  WFMZ-TV
  • McGlinn Cancer Institute at Reading Hospital will offer free cancer screenings for prostate and skin cancer at 420 S. 5th Ave. in West Reading. The prostate screening is scheduled for November 5 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for eligible men and the skin screening will be held on November 11 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.—appointments are required due to limited space.  Berks Weekly

SPORTS NEWS

  • Three Berks field hockey teams won their first round matches in the District 3 tournament on Monday as Oley Valley beat Schuylkill Valley 5 to 0, Berks Catholic won 1 to 0 over Wyomissing and Wilson defeated Gov Mifflin 8 to 0. Oley Valley (seeded third in Class A) will host the Saints in a quarterfinal match at 1 p.m. Saturday.  Reading Eagle
  • Wilson will host Manheim Township tonight at John Gurski Stadium – a winner-takes-all game for the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 1 title. The Bulldogs, led by first-year starter Mason Young and running back Correll Akings, face a tough challenge as they aim for a first-round playoff bye.  Reading Eagle
  • Berks Catholic will host Annville-Cleona at Forino Sports Complex today at 7 p.m. in a winner-takes-all Section 5 title game where the Saints aim for their first championship since 2018 while relying on a strong running game. Other high school football matchups in Berks County tonight will affect playoff seeding—teams across the region vie for critical positions.  Reading Eagle
