COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Animal Rescue League of Berks County received a $4,000 grant from the ASPCA and will host the Subaru Loves Pets Adoption Event at its Cumru Township shelter on Saturday, Oct 25 where adoption fees will be waived—special activities include fresh coffee, smoothies, a Subaru display, and giveaways from 9 a.m. to noon.  Reading Eagle
  • World Affairs Council of Greater Reading will host its seventh annual Pub Global Trivia fundraiser tomorrow at Sly Fox Taphouse in Wyomissing starting at 5:30 p.m. to raise funds for the Alan Miller Scholarship program & honor the late solicitor Alan Miller. The event will bring together 10 preregistered teams & support global affairs education for local students.  Reading Eagle
  • Berks County nonprofits are facing a perfect storm as state and federal funds have stalled while demand for services grows and agencies like Safe Berks have cut staff or closed temporarily. United Way urges residents to donate, volunteer, and contact legislators + nearly 60% of nonprofits risk running out of emergency funds by the end of October.  WFMZ-TV
  • Weaver’s Orchard at 40 Fruit Lane in Robeson Township will host two fall events— the Fall Festival on Oct 25 and the Pick or Treat event on Oct 31. The Fall Festival will offer apple and pumpkin picking, a corn maze, hayrides, live entertainment and food options while Pick or Treat will include a self-guided orchard tour with a 1/4-peck apple bag, a hayride to the pumpkin patch, a themed photo op and $15 tickets with walk-ins welcomed until capacity is reached.  Reading Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Berks County school leaders and career directors attended the Agriculture Workshop hosted by the Intermediate Unit and the Agriculture Department to learn about innovative technologies and career opportunities in farming. They visited local companies such as F.M. Brown’s Sons Inc. + Unique Pretzel Bakery to see how tradition and modern techniques work together for future ag careers.  Reading Eagle
  • Michael Fidanza, a professor at Penn State Berks, has been named the 239th president of the Philadelphia Society for Promoting Agriculture and will serve a one-year term — a group that has promoted agricultural best practices since 1785. He said the appointment honors his work in research and teaching with the industry that supports his students.  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Four Berks County farms were saved by selling development rights—state and county funds of $708,458 and $34,048 protected the land from being turned into homes or stores. The deal keeps these farms active for growing crops for local families.  Reading Eagle
  • Berks County veteran Charles Ziegler received his long-awaited Bronze Star Medal during a special ceremony at the Etchberger Veterans Service Center in Wyomissing after serving in Vietnam (March 1968 to March 1969). The award corrects an oversight that left him unrecognized for his vital service over 50 years ago.  Reading Eagle
  • A state bill that would require schools to notify parents about weapon incidents on campus passed the Senate — it now awaits Governor Shapiro’s signature. Sponsored by State Senator Jarrett Coleman, the measure applies to public, nonpublic and private schools after parental concerns followed an incident in Parkland.  WFMZ-TV
  • Reading — Easterseals Eastern Pennsylvania spent $250K to keep therapy programs running for nearly 400 children with disabilities as state budget delays have held up county funding. CEO Mindy McCormick said the nonprofit will review its operations if these funding delays continue.  WFMZ-TV

  • Wilson-West Lawn and Berks Catholic enter championship-deciding games on Friday with top state rankings. Wilson-West Lawn, ranked ninth in Class 6A, will host Manheim Township for the Section 1 title — Berks Catholic, newly ranked tenth in Class 3A, will face Annville-Cleona for the Section 5 title.  Reading Eagle
