  • On Sunday, the Reading NAACP held its 38th Annual Freedom Fund Gala at Redner's Event Center to raise funds for education, housing, economic development, health, political action and veterans’ affairs — community impact awards were also given to highlight local achievements. NAACP Reading Chapter President Wynton Butler said the focus was on the fierce urgency of now to boost voter turnout and community involvement.  WFMZ-TV

  • Tr3s Salon moved into its new Penn Avenue location on Sunday, replacing its smaller space to allow three stylists to work together and serve more customers—co-owner Magda Mendoza said the new space helps the team treat clients like family.  WFMZ-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • During Homecoming & Family Weekend this past weekend, Alvernia University hosted a first-year family tailgate and the Pack Dash 5K where 61 runners supported funds for Hope Fund and Clare's Cupboard - Liz Sweeney finished the course in under 19 minutes. The school said Homecoming & Family Weekend 2026 will be held from October 9 to 11.  Alvernia University

  • Oley Valley beat Wilson 1-0 in the BCIAA field hockey final at Alvernia University on October 18th when Cassidy Clark scored an unassisted goal—Charlotte Prout made six saves as the Lynx earned their second county title in three years and both teams advanced to the District 3 tournament.  Reading Eagle
