COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Library staff and volunteers at the Muhlenberg Community Library started a month-long food drive to support military families affected by delayed paychecks (government shutdown impacts). Donations can be dropped off at 3612 Kutztown Road during regular hours (organized with Keystone Military Families). WFMZ-TV
- ➤ A Spring Township florist surprised local customers by handing out bouquets that brought a burst of kindness and joy to the neighborhood. WFMZ-TV
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Barrio Alegría held Barrio Lights at Reading’s WCR Center for the Arts on the final day of Hispanic Heritage Month to celebrate culture, creativity and community while raising funds for programs that support local families, youth and small businesses. Organizers and State Rep. Johanny Cepeda-Freytiz said the event brought local artists and neighbors together with a $20 entry fee & a shared commitment to future community support. WFMZ-TV
- ➤ Local Berks County actor Scot Teller is set to play Burt Young in an upcoming Rocky movie after a chance meeting with Griffin Dunne led to his casting—he said the role honors his family and his mom's memory. WFMZ-TV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ West Reading has been awarded a $30,000 state grant to create an Active Transportation Plan that will improve walk and bike routes in the borough. Officials will work with planners over the next year—using data and public input—to connect neighborhoods, parks and businesses. Berks Weekly
REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ The owner of the Berkshire Mall in Wyomissing said the 55-year-old shopping center is under contract to be sold—reports indicate that most of the building may be torn down except for the Boscov's store. The new developer will redevelop retail space and plan future fixes for parking lot safety issues. WFMZ-TV
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Oley Valley and Wilson will meet at 7 p.m. Saturday at Alvernia University to play for the BCIAA field hockey title. Oley Valley won 1-0 over Wilson on Sept 24 and both teams posted shutouts in their semifinals. Reading Eagle
- ➤ Twin Valley moved up to third in Class 4A rankings after beating Wyomissing 28-6 and will play Lampeter-Strasburg Friday for a chance to secure the section title — Wilson cracked the top 10 in 6A as teams prepare for upcoming games. Reading Eagle
