- ➤ Families gathered at Ark Bible Chapel in Earl Township on Saturday for the Fall Community Festival, where they enjoyed homemade soup, live music, children’s activities and the unveiling of a new nature-inspired playground. Neighbors joined in a chainsaw carving demo, nature walk, pumpkin painting and a rummage exchange (designed to unite the community) that fulfilled the event's goal. Reading Eagle
- ➤ Berks County received a $20,000 grant from a state commission to help plan a celebration for the nation’s 250th anniversary. The Reading Symphony Orchestra will use the funds to present the Star Spangled Spectacular on July 4—featuring music and fireworks. Reading Eagle
- ➤ Reading’s annual holiday parade themed 'The Gift of Giving Continues' will take place on Nov. 22 on Penn Street (starting at 10 a.m. at 11th Street and ending at Second Street) as community groups and local organizations share festive floats, performances and decorations that celebrate kindness and unity. - ➤ The Berks LaunchBox and Kutztown University SBDC have partnered to offer a free Spanish-language workshop series for entrepreneurs in Reading and Kutztown. The monthly series will begin with a session on How to Register a Business on November 20th from 6 to 7 p.m. Berks Weekly
- ➤ A Berks County truck company will close its plant at 485 Wenger Drive in Ephrata on December 15—92 workers will be affected according to a WARN notice from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor. The company, which has facilities in the United States and Canada, made no further comment when reached for more information. WFMZ-TV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Berks County received a $20,000 grant from America250PA to help the county and the Reading Symphony Orchestra plan the Star Spangled Spectacular on July 4 (event details are still being finalized). The grant, awarded as part of the second Semiquincentennial Grant Round, will support a day of music, fireworks, and fun that marks the nation’s 250th birthday (local contributions are expected). - ➤ Thousands in Berks County will lose food aid after November 1 as new SNAP rules require most able-bodied adults to work—about 3,290 current recipients are expected to lose benefits when the state ends a special waiver for those without young children. The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services is working to help residents adjust to these changes. Berks Weekly
- ➤ West Reading received $30,000 from the Pennsylvania Department of Health + Pennsylvania Downtown Center to create an active transportation plan, with local planners set to collect data and public input over the next year; the borough is one of 11 awarded through the WalkWorks program to improve walking and biking networks.
