COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A diverse lineup of community events is planned for the coming weeks—highlighted by the 25th Annual Jewish Food and Cultural Festival at Reform Congregation Oheb Sholom on Nov 2 with traditional food and music, and Oct 18 events at the restored train station and Reading Regional Airport featuring an open house and a karaoke fundraiser. Other planned activities range from historical society meetings and craft fairs to pet costume contests and a Pennsylvania German forum, offering something for every local family.  Reading Eagle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Exeter Friends Meeting will mark its 300th anniversary on Oct. 19 when visitors can worship at 10:30 a.m. and join guided tours, presentations on genealogy, and a Heritage Day Fall Festival + local members share how their roots connect to early founders like the Boones and Lincolns.   • The Pennsylvania Heartland Herb Society held its annual Herbal Symposium Monday at the DoubleTree in Reading to discuss the power and uses of herbs—participants heard author William Woys Weaver explain the culinary evolution of Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine and learn about America's first book on botanical medicine.  WFMZ-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students in Alvernia University's Intro to Cybersecurity class learn to guard against online threats by practicing digital attacks and defenses—this course uses robotics and AI to show real job skills. The program also welcomed alumnus Noah Govern who shared his experience working as a Cybersecurity Incident Response Team analyst—Alvernia plans to open a new cybersecurity lab next year.  WFMZ-TV
  • Alvernia University named Michael Duff as the new chairperson of its Board of Trustees, replacing Gregg Shemanski after his three-year term. The university also appointed Timothy J. Daley (a Habitat for Humanity leader and alumnus) to its board to help guide its future growth.  Alvernia University
  • Gavin Wanner, a Berks County boy scout, is rebuilding the old fishing pier at Blue Marsh Lake so it will be ADA accessible — he is working with his father to tear out the old structure and build a safer, long-lasting pier that will help him earn Eagle Scout status while raising over $1,200 through GoFundMe.  WFMZ-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission will stock about 116,500 trout in 118 waterways from now until mid-December — with 89,000 trout to be added in October and another 28,600 in November and December — to support ice fishing during the extended trout season through Feb. 16. Anglers should check the stocking schedule — as changes may occur due to water temperature and hatchery logistics — before planning their trips.  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Rep. Manuel Guzman announced Friday that Cornerstone Apartments in Reading got a $1.7 million housing tax credit from the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency to help build 46 affordable units for residents 62 and older— the credits will be given each year for 10 years and may add $17 million for more affordable projects in Berks County.  Reading Eagle
  • BARTA is collecting feedback on proposed route and schedule changes for 2026 — including more trips to Birdsboro, nighttime stops at Shillington Plaza and adjusted times at Berkshire Mall — as part of a 30-day comment period following public hearings on North Eleventh Street. The agency will review rider input at upcoming board meetings to finalize plans that fit budget limits and regional transit needs.  WFMZ-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Seven Berks high school football teams are set to qualify for the District 3 playoffs as the regular season nears its end, with four set to earn first-round byes if rankings hold. Berks Catholic tops Class 3A while Twin Valley and Wilson lead in 4A and 6A—Gov. Mifflin remains on the bubble.  Reading Eagle
  • Today, runners at Kutztown University’s 5,000-meter course will compete in the BCIAA Cross Country Championships with the boys starting at 4 p.m. and the girls at 4:45 p.m.—two new individual champions will be crowned as last year’s winners have moved on to college.  Reading Eagle
