- ➤ The first Pennside Fall Festival ended Sunday at the Pennside Drive-in with rides, games and food+ organizers said the community's response exceeded expectations+ plans are underway for next year. WFMZ-TV
- ➤ Helping Harvest Fresh Food Bank held its 3rd annual Celebration of Community and Hope at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Reading to raise funds for food programs that feed neighbors. Speakers including Pennsylvania’s Secretary of Agriculture and Helping Harvest leaders highlighted the impact of the new Community Kitchen—opened in downtown Reading in April—and efforts to fight hunger in Berks and Schuylkill Counties. - ➤ Acclaimed playwright Douglas Carter Beane returns to Reading as Genesius Theatre’s Artistic Director today at 7 p.m. at 153 N. 10th St.—he will lead efforts to revive the theatre with new plays, musicals, and restoration projects. Berks Weekly
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Michael Fidanza, a professor at Penn State Berks, was named president of the Philadelphia Society for Promoting Agriculture for a one-year term and drew on his early experience working on his father’s mushroom farm. Dr. Rebecca West Burns, dean at Kutztown University, represented Pennsylvania at the Teacher Apprenticeship Summit held in Oxford, England. Reading Eagle
- ➤ Reading Science Center will unveil its new exhibit "Energy in a Box" on October 18th at 11:00 a.m. as the interactive display teaches how battery plates power engines and promotes recycling and sustainability—families can enjoy hands-on science activities with free admission from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Berks Weekly
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ French Creek State Park will debut two new glamping loops in spring 2026 — one open from March 6 through December 31 and one from April 24 through October 31 — that give campers a blend of outdoor fun and modern comforts. - ➤ The City of Reading was awarded a $250K state grant to begin planning the redevelopment of the Dana property—a 50-acre site that has been vacant for decades.
