COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Berks County boy scout named Gavin Wanner is teaming with his father—Robert Wanner—to remove an old fishing pier at Blue Marsh Lake and rebuild it to meet ADA standards, hoping to earn Eagle Scout status. Their project has raised over $1,200 and will use heavy equipment to finish the work.  WFMZ-TV
  • American Water gave local residents a firsthand look at waste water management during a tour held Saturday — the event showed how water is treated before being returned to homes.  WFMZ-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Reading Film Festival is lighting up the city today with a special presentation of Coco at the IMAX and a behind the scenes look at The Crew Documentary at the Goggleworks — tomorrow, the festival will feature Emmy nominated costume designer Laura Frecon sharing her insights.  WFMZ-TV
  • The Reading-Berks Guild of Craftsmen will mark its 75th Annual Juried Holiday Fine Art and Craft Festival at Kutztown University’s O’Pake Fieldhouse on October 25 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on October 26 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. – more than 75 artisans will display work including jewelry, ceramics, fiber arts, woodwork, glass and folk art while live music, a Student Gallery, an on-site café, daily giveaways and a prize drawing enhance the event; adults pay a $6 donation and children 12 and under enter free as proceeds support educational programs.  Berks Weekly
  • St. Michael’s Church in Tilden Township will host a Pennsylvania German service with English translation on October 19 at 2 p.m. to celebrate its 150th anniversary—David Adam will speak and Die Schwadore Schalle Chorus will perform songs, and refreshments will follow.  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State officials approved $742,506 in funding to preserve four Berks County farms and keep over 240 acres of farmland dedicated to agriculture. The funding is part of a larger state program to protect farmland from development — an effort that has saved hundreds of farms statewide.  Berks Weekly

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A senior housing project at South Sixth and Chestnut streets is moving forward after it secured $17 million in tax credits and a $1 million state grant. The project — which will offer 39 one-bedroom and 7 two-bedroom apartments with rents from about $260 to $1,200 — will be move-in-ready in about two and a half years.  WFMZ-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Exeter lost 30-28 to Hempfield on Friday night in a close game at Hempfield High School — the Eagles will face Conestoga Valley this Friday in Section 2 play.   Reading Eagle
  • On Friday night, Muhlenberg rallied to beat Ephrata 33-28 with a late 7-yard touchdown run by Cameron Small, while Gov. Mifflin won 49-7 over Lebanon, Manheim Township shut out Reading High 63-0, Warwick beat Conrad Weiser 20-0, Manheim Central defeated Fleetwood 42-3, and Lancaster Catholic outscored Kutztown 49-7.  Reading Eagle
  • On Saturday at Bob Wolfrum Field, Twin Valley beat Wyomissing 28–6. The Raiders—unbeaten at 5–0—played a hard, physical game as senior Drew Engle rushed for 205 yards and two touchdowns and will play Lampeter-Strasburg next week.  Reading Eagle
  • At Schuylkill Valley High School, the Panthers beat Hamburg 31-13 in the annual Frost Bowl on Friday night, with quarterback Alex Aletras completing 13-of-19 passes for 249 yards and two touchdowns — lifting their record to 5-3 while Hamburg dropped to 2-6. The Panthers will face Annville Cleona on Friday as they head into the season's final stretch.  Reading Eagle
