COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Habitat for Humanity of Berks County showed off a new mural on a renovated rowhome at Douglass and Moss streets in Reading. Local students from Reading-Muhlenberg Career and Technology Center, middle schools, and Albright College helped with the project—and keys will be handed over in early 2026.  Reading Eagle
  • A French metal detecting enthusiast found a silver World War II ID bracelet that belonged to Reading native Carl Milligan and returned it to his family on Oct. 7 at the Etchberger Veterans Center in Wyomissing—his daughter Patricia received the cherished item after county veterans officials traced her through a community Facebook post. Local officials and supporters worked together to bring a lost piece of family history back home.  Reading Eagle
  • Habitat for Humanity held a preview event at a home on the 900 block of Douglass Street in Reading where a new mural was added as part of a plan to revitalize blighted properties, and students from the Reading-Muhlenberg Career-and-Technology Center are working on the interior while executive director Tim Daley said the project will expand to 100 homes over the next three years.  WFMZ-TV

  • Cherry Bekaert plans to acquire Herbein and Company, a Reading-based CPA firm that offers tax, audit, advisory, HR consulting, and risk management services, later this month. The move expands Cherry Bekaert's footprint in Pennsylvania—fueling a seamless integration of both firms’ operations.  WFMZ-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • A benefit concert featuring the Groovemasters with Bennie Sims and Cliff Starkey and Uptown Band with Erich Cawalla will take place tomorrow at the Goodwill Beneficial Association in Muhlenberg Township. Doors open at 7 p.m.—bands perform from 8 to 11 to raise funds for the Alisa B. Anderson Memorial Scholarship Fund honoring the late local singer.  Reading Eagle
  • The City of Reading will host an open house for its Latino Artist Exhibit on Hispanic Heritage Month on October 10 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at City Hall (815 Washington Street) where local artists will answer questions about their work. The exhibit is free and will also be available during regular business hours Monday through Friday until the end of October.  Berks Weekly
  • The Reading Film Office hosted its first physical tour today for film and media executives, showing locations like the bank building at 5th and Penn, Santander Performing Arts Center, Reading High School, the Pagoda, and Reading Regional Airport. The tour will continue on Thursday when local farms are added to highlight the region's diverse film settings—boosting local economic benefits.  WFMZ-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Berks Business Education Coalition will host its second annual Business and Education Summit at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Reading from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 14—more than 175 business and school leaders will share ideas and plans for training the future workforce.  Reading Eagle
  • Alvernia University's BSN program achieved a 100% NCLEX-RN pass rate for the second year in a row, proving strong teaching and solid support. The university earned Nursing College of Distinction recognition and works with local partners—such as Reading Hospital—to meet regional healthcare needs.  Alvernia University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Pa. House Insurance Committee passed a bill Tuesday that requires insurance companies to cover all FDA-approved vaccines recommended by major medical groups—this measure followed Gov. Shapiro's order to ensure free vaccination access amid CDC changes.  Reading Eagle
  • Reading proposed a $284 million budget for 2026 that includes the city's first property tax hike in four years to cover rising costs and a growing deficit. The rate will increase from 18.129 mills to 19.261 mills, meaning a $100,000 property owner will pay about $163 more—City Council will review the plan in the coming weeks.  Reading Eagle

SPORTS NEWS

  • Conrad Weiser ended its perfect Division 2 season by beating Exeter 4-1 on Tuesday and finished 17-0-1 as it will host a BCIAA quarterfinal on Saturday. Tulpehocken and Schuylkill Valley also won their matches in Divisions 3 and 4 with scores of 2-1.  Reading Eagle
