- ➤ Connections Work hosted a job fair on Monday, Oct 6 at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Reading—over 30 local companies, including Brentwood Industries and Unique Snacks, connected with job seekers with criminal records to help them secure stable work and benefits. Reading Eagle
- ➤ The Mt. Penn Fire Company remembered longtime member Barry Vogt, who died last week at age 85 and served the fire company for 62 years—many friends joined a funeral procession Tuesday to say goodbye. His work as president, past chief, and mentor made a lasting impact on the community. WFMZ-TV
- ➤ A French historian with a metal detector discovered a silver bracelet that belonged to late World War Two veteran Carl Milligan, and the relic was returned to his family's care at a Veterans Affairs ceremony. - ➤ Amanda Lynn McCoy was appointed executive director of the Berks History Center on Sept. 29 — a longtime Berks County resident and experienced nonprofit leader who now aims to lead the center's Museum Revitalization project. - ➤ Reading City Hall will host an open house for a Latino art exhibit in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month on Oct. 10 from noon to 2 p.m.—the exhibit features about 10 pieces from local Latino artists and some will be present to share contact details. - ➤ The Patton Avenue Learning Center in Oakbrook opened in early September and held its first Fall Fest on Oct. 3 with arts and crafts, games, face painting and snacks for children aged 6 weeks to 5 years. The center is a partnership between the Reading Housing Authority and Opportunity House that offers affordable child care and aims for a Keystone STAR 4 rating—helping families gain stability to move from public housing. - ➤ District Judge Eric Taylor and Assistant District Attorney Kathryn Lehman are competing for a seat on the Berks County bench to fill the vacancy left by Judge Jeffrey Sprecher—both candidates stressed their extensive legal backgrounds while pledging to serve a 10-year term with an annual salary of $227,411. - ➤ Reading City Council unanimously confirmed Javier Ruiz as the new police chief on Monday, praising his 25 years of service and strong community ties—he will now lead the department following former Chief Elias Vazquez's resignation. Reading Eagle
