- ➤ Reading’s Public Works Department and Environmental Advisory Council is hosting a fall citywide cleanup from Oct. 13 to Oct. 18 where students, families, and volunteers will pick up litter and clean storm drains — the effort begins on Columbus Day and offers community service hours for students. - ➤ Reading Regional Airport is set to host the fourth annual Reading Aviation Career Expo this weekend with three events scheduled for Oct. 10 and Oct. 11. On Oct. 10, a free NetJets Aviation Career Fair will allow students and professionals to explore aviation careers while a WEEU Hangar Party offers light refreshments and music—then on Oct. 11 the Aeros and Autos Car Show will display classic cars alongside aircraft and local vendors. - ➤ Connections Work hosted its fall career fair Monday morning at the DoubleTree Hotel in Reading to help local individuals who have been in jail get a second chance. Nearly 40 employers and service providers met with job seekers—providing a single stop for reentry support. WFMZ-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Reading City Council unanimously confirmed Javier Ruiz as the city's new police chief after promoting him from deputy last month—he brings over 25 years of service and a record of community engagement—replacing former chief Elias Vasquez, who stepped down in September. WFMZ-TV
- ➤ Pennsylvania State Police Troop L from Reading held its Sunny Day Camp on Oct. 4 at Camp Manatawny in Earl Township for children and adults with special needs. - ➤ Cumru Township officials voted 4-1 to repeal the LERTA tax break for the Route 10 lot—canceling 10-year tax abatement options after a planned warehouse was abandoned, and the property owner has since begun talks with an AI data center developer while legal challenges from local residents continue. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Local medical experts say counterfeit child car seats that lack proper labels and safety features can put children at risk. They advise parents to buy seats in person or from the official manufacturer+and have them checked for correct certification. Reading Eagle
- ➤ Nurses and behavioral health professionals in Boyertown and Tri-County can apply for a student loan assistance program that will give them $1,500 now and $1,500 after one year to help with at least $10,000 of debt. Applications are open until Oct. 30 and winners will be announced by Dec. 5—this program honors Diana Smith's legacy of service. Reading Eagle
