COMMUNITY NEWS

  • After more than 80 years lost to history, the remains of young WWII soldier William McMichael returned home today for burial in Boyertown; his DNA match (two femur bones) confirmed his identity and he will be laid to rest at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.  WFMZ-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Mount Penn Borough Municipal Authority chairman Joseph Boyle and environmental consultant Larry Lloyd led a walking tour at Carsonia Park to update state lawmakers on the progress of restoring Crystal Lake — phase one of which improved the lake’s depth using a $236,813 grant. The restoration will move to phase two in the spring with wetlands, stormwater upgrades and spillway repairs to protect drinking water for 30,000 households.  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pennsylvania keeps a registry of people suspected of child abuse even when there is no conviction to protect children—lawmakers now plan a tier system that will ease long-term impacts and offer a chance for appeal. The plan would let those with less severe cases avoid harsh background checks and reduce lasting harm.  WFMZ-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • A local doctor warned that fall weather may trigger more asthma attacks in children as colds, allergies and viruses can narrow airways and cause wheezing. The doctor advised families to use an asthma action plan so kids can play safely—this plan helps them spot triggers and take medicines when needed.  WFMZ-TV

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Ethos Development Group has proposed two warehouses totaling 1.3 million square feet near Greystone residential development on Krick Lane in South Heidelberg Township. Township officials will review the plans at a meeting on Oct. 7 at 7 p.m.—the project includes traffic improvements and noise buffers and may boost tax revenue.  Reading Eagle

SPORTS NEWS

  • On October 2, Schuylkill Valley won 6-0 over Fleetwood in field hockey with Ruby Smaglinski scoring four goals as Twin Valley beat Muhlenberg 4-0, Gov.-Mifflin defeated Daniel Boone 6-0, Wilson topped North Penn 7-0, and Oley Valley won 7-0 over Reading High. In girls volleyball, Wilson beat Muhlenberg 3-0 while Fleetwood won 3-0 against Daniel Boone and in girls tennis Gov.-Mifflin and Daniel Boone secured singles victories.  Reading Eagle
  • Gigi Gonzalez scored three goals and added an assist to lead Fleetwood to a 6-3 win over Wyomissing on Thursday. Exeter won 5-0 against Twin Valley, Conrad Weiser beat Daniel Boone 6-1, Gov. Mifflin defeated Muhlenberg 5-1, and Hamburg and Wilson also claimed wins—marking a busy day in Berks girls soccer.  Reading Eagle
  • Wyomissing improved to 7—0 with a 56—6 win over Daniel Boone on Oct. 2 at Birdsboro. The Spartans now set their sights on Twin Valley next week as coach Wolfrum and players work to stay focused against tougher competition.  Reading Eagle
  • Reading Fightin Phils' head groundskeeper Dirt—the keeper of FirstEnergy Stadium's field—leads his crew with sidekick Penny as he uses 35 years of experience to keep the field safe and playable. His nickname came from a PR director—who first saw him dragging mud on the field.  WFMZ-TV
