COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Reading will host a Dumpster Day event on Oct. 18 from 8 a.m. to noon at eight locations where residents can drop off unwanted bulky items — hazardous materials, tires, used oil, chemicals, paint, televisions and appliances will not be accepted.  Reading Eagle
  • Gracie retired after eight years as the Reading Fire Department’s fire accelerant-detection K-9; her retirement party at City Council Chambers on Friday honored her work with over 100 people present—her retirement became official on Sunday morning. Lt. Trent Zulick now trains a new K-9 partner—ensuring the fire department can continue its work.  Reading Eagle
  • Reading Fire Chief James Stoudt said that recent fires in Carbon County have brought back memories of the tragic 1997 Huyett Street fire which claimed one adult and four children—an event that changed the neighborhood and now guides training for new recruits.  WFMZ-TV
  • Berks County will host several Halloween parades in October from Temple on October 4th to Hamburg on October 25th—rain dates are set for many events—and the Pottstown parade was canceled due to liability insurance costs.  Reading Eagle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Reading’s final downtown First Friday Block Party of 2025 is scheduled for Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. on the 600 block of Penn Street to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month—the event will include music, dance performances, local vendors, a domino tournament, bull riding, a bouncy slide and giveaways with free parking available at Judy’s on Cherry lot and Chiarelli Plaza garage.  Reading Eagle
  • Reading Community Players is staging Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors—a humorous re-imagining of Bram Stoker's classic with 10 local actors delivering both scares and laughs. The play runs from Friday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. to Sunday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m. at the WCR Center for the Arts in Downtown Reading.  Reading Eagle
  • Oktoberfest 2025 begins today at Reading Liederkranz with German food, beer, live music, and a flag raising in City Park. Organizers have switched to a cashless system—cards only—and plan to start next year’s event soon.  WFMZ-TV
  • Penn State Berks held Fiesta Latina on Wednesday as part of Hispanic Heritage Month, showcasing Latin cultures with displays of clothing and baking tools along with a buffet of traditional foods. The event also featured live music—dance performances and salsa lessons that enriched the celebration.  WFMZ-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Albright College is entering a transformational phase after a major financial downturn, with President Debra Townsley saying the school has stabilized its finances and will boost enrollment by adding new majors and enhanced programs. Administrators detailed cost-cutting measures and a planned $15 million withdrawal from the endowment (used to renovate a key campus building) to support future growth.  Reading Eagle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Pennsylvania American Water will hold an open house at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant on October 11 from 9:30 until 11:30 a.m.—customers can join guided walking tours to learn about the wastewater treatment process and watershed conservation. Attendees must wear sturdy, closed-toe footwear and follow safety guidelines at 400 Hanover St.  Reading Eagle

HEALTH NEWS

  • Berks-based Bachman's Roofing donated and installed a new roof for Teri Jensen-Sellers, a breast cancer survivor from Pottstown who faced financial hardships after her 2020 diagnosis and needed home care. The donation occurs during Breast Cancer Awareness Month—PA Breast Cancer Coalition will start a fundraiser on Wednesday with matching donations up to $10,000.  WFMZ-TV

  • Wyomissing moved to No. 3 in Class 4A and Twin Valley to No. 5 ahead of their Oct. 11 game at Wyomissing — Muhlenberg earned statewide recognition as a team to watch in Class 5A — as all teams remain unbeaten.  Reading Eagle
  • On Tuesday, Wilson beat Exeter 2-0 at Exeter High School as Hunter Johansmeyer scored twice with Ryan Crouse assisting, while Conrad Weiser defeated Fleetwood 8-2 with goals from Owen Hunt, Abu Barrie and Parker Centeno—Daniel Boone, Kutztown and Schuylkill Valley also won their games.  Reading Eagle
