COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Wednesday, the city honored Vietnam War soldiers at Reading’s 37th anniversary memorial in City Park—refurbished last fall and earlier this year—by reading every name aloud and placing a red rose for each soldier along with three yellow roses for each POW/MIA.  WFMZ-TV
  • The FirstEnergy Foundation awarded $750,000 in grants to 37 PA food banks and pantries and will help deliver nearly 2.3 million meals in the region as part of Hunger Action Month—supporting a larger $2.5 million program for 104 hunger relief organizations across six states.  WFMZ-TV
  • Residents in Tilden Township raised concerns at a meeting about a duck farm on Cheese Lane that they say causes strong odors and may affect local well water. Township officials said they will file a complaint with the state DEP and urge residents to submit individual complaints (focusing on odor and water usage).  Reading Eagle
  • Schuylkill Haven Borough Day returns for its 37th year on Sept. 27 with rides, local music, food and historical displays celebrating the borough's 275th anniversary. The Main Street event will feature train rides, pony rides and an open house by the local historical society (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) with train tickets available by calling 610-562-2102.  Reading Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Alvernia University and its Total Experience Learning Institute won top honors at the Building Berks Awards for the John R. Post Center at Reading CollegeTowne, the Moss and Douglass Mural, and the American Crane Mural project. The awards show the university's strong role in education and community art — key work in downtown Reading that will lead to more projects.  Alvernia University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Reading City Council unanimously approved new zoning rules on Monday to regulate short-term rentals such as Airbnb and Vrbo — rules that take effect immediately. Property owners must now apply for a zoning permit and an annual city license to operate these rentals.  Reading Eagle
  • Cumru Township commissioners voted 4-1 to repeal tax break rules for a Route 10 site after noting the township's financial challenges and said the repeal will face a final vote soon - they also approved a request for consultants to apply for a 2-million-dollar grant for façade upgrades at a shopping center on Lancaster Pike.  Reading Eagle
  • The Berks County Convention Center Authority reported strong results at Santander Arena and the Performing Arts Center with record income in 2024 and improved rankings in 2025 despite a drop in events. The Authority outlined new upgrades—such as seating improvements and a $2 million concession investment—and also detailed support for the Reading Royals and community programs to boost local benefits.  Reading Eagle

SPORTS NEWS

  • Todd Blackledge, a former Penn State quarterback and NBC Sports analyst, said that the game between Penn State and Oregon on Saturday night at 7:30 will depend on strong line play, turnovers, and explosive plays—focusing on the trenches at Beaver Stadium. He noted that both teams have elite programs and are adjusting strategies after recent roster changes.  Reading Eagle
  • Rick Perez returns as Reading High's boys head basketball coach after the board approved his appointment on Wednesday night—he coached the team for 12 seasons, winning three state titles and setting a school record with 281 wins. He replaces Francis Camara and will earn a salary of $10,944.52 for the upcoming season.  Reading Eagle
  • Phillies prospects Otto Kemp, Griff McGarry, Aidan Miller and Felix Reyes earned postseason awards for their play this season — Kemp received the Phillies’ top minor league position honor and McGarry was named top pitcher. The IronPigs claimed a third consecutive attendance title at Coca-Cola Park with 585,167 fans and an average of 8,242 per game.  Reading Eagle
  • Conrad Weiser head tennis coach Ryan Knarr won his 300th career match on Monday when the Scouts defeated Muhlenburg 7—0; he advanced to a 300—75 record in 11 seasons and became the seventh coach in Berks County to reach the milestone.  Reading Eagle
  • Trevor Amorim, a Northern Lehigh grad, overcame injuries and coach changes to become a key wide receiver for Kutztown as he made five catches for 77 yards and scored two touchdowns this season. The Golden Bears are 3-0 and will play winless Shepherd on Saturday at 12 p.m.—the game will test their strong passing attack.  Reading Eagle
