COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The IM ABLE Games: Races and Reps on the Runway took place Saturday at Reading Regional Airport in Bern Township with 184 participants and 40 volunteers joining a 2-Mile Fun Run, Walk or Roll, Sprint Duathlon, Kaaginator Fitness Challenge, and a wing-eating contest. Proceeds support the IM ABLE Foundation’s efforts to help those with disabilities—such as 41-year-old Steve McLaughlin from Blandon, who became a quadriplegic in a 2023 workplace fall—access adaptive equipment.  Reading Eagle
  • On Saturday, members of the Special Needs Interest Group of North Eastern Berks attended a dance at Zion Moselem Lutheran Church in Richmond Township — 12 group members and their parents enjoyed dancing, lunch, and photos — and the event closed with a fellowship circle and prayer.  Reading Eagle
  • Lou Tierno, director of the Reading Buccaneers— a drum and bugle corps—said the nonprofit sought a city partnership to secure an indoor rehearsal space for winter and a football field with artificial turf for summer practices. The group’s 131 members have been without a regular facility since losing its longtime site in 2017 and aim to reestablish its identity in Reading.  WFMZ-TV

  • Tom Derr, a longtime business owner at West Lawn Beverage Company, died last week after a car crash at 94—his family plans to keep his legacy alive by continuing the company in Spring Township.  WFMZ-TV
  • Army veteran Kevin Rarick launched Caring Transitions of Reading to help seniors downsize, declutter and manage estate sales—serving Reading and surrounding areas while building local partnerships.  Reading Eagle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Reading Liederkranz will begin its annual Oktoberfest next Wednesday at 143 Spook Lane in Lower Alsace Township, offering traditional German food, live music and a cashless payment system. Festival improvements include heaters in the pavilions and enhanced parking lot lighting—changes that aim to speed service and create a family-friendly atmosphere through Oct. 5.  Reading Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Alvernia University was named a top national university for the fourth year in a row by U.S. News & World Report for its strong nursing program & work to boost social mobility. President Glynis A. Fitzgerald said the honor shows the university's deep commitment to academic excellence.  Alvernia University
  • A state budget impasse has left Reading School District without expected state and federal funding, causing a severe revenue gap and delaying planned hires. The district, which relies on nearly 90% of its revenue from these funds, may have to borrow money if funding does not resume soon—raising concerns over maintaining essential services.  Reading Eagle
  • The BCIU opened its new learning center at the Helping Harvest Annex near GoggleWorks—dedicated in memory of Cindy Boscov during a Sept. 14 ribbon cutting—and welcomed its first students on Sept. 2 to serve local families in need of early education. The community-funded Head Start facility aims to expand its capacity to 34 students while building on a strong local partnership.  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today the Berks County Redevelopment Authority will meet via Zoom at 2:30 p.m. to decide whether to certify the former Crowne Plaza hotel at 1741 Paper Mill Road as blighted—this move could allow officials to seize the property through eminent domain while the owners, Lockwood Hotels, have committed to fixing violations and making major changes early next year.  WFMZ-TV
  • Berks County officials are meeting via Zoom at 2:30 p.m. today to decide if the former Crowne Plaza hotel in Wyomissing should be certified as blighted so that the county can use eminent domain. The hotel has been vacant for three years—its owners plan to begin major repairs early next year to make needed changes.  Berks Weekly

SPORTS NEWS

  • Felix Reyes, a 24-year-old Reading Fightin Phils player, was named Eastern League Most Valuable Player after he posted a league-best .335 average in 95 games—he led the league in slugging and OPS. His strong season with 15 home runs, 62 runs and 34 doubles marked the first time a Phillie won the award since Dylan Cozens in 2016.  Reading Eagle
