COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Youth Volunteer Corps of Reading honored dozens of young volunteers in a recent ceremony for their community service, with 966 participants logging nearly 10,500 hours over the last year. The program by VOiCEup Berks also presented special awards—including the Project of the Year Award—to recognize outstanding efforts in projects like transforming unused spaces into community gardens.  Reading Eagle
  • On Saturday morning, the Council of Chemical Abuse hosted a recovery walk in Berks County to honor National Recovery Month + the event highlighted new treatment practices that reduce recovery stigma. The participants walked from the Recovery Coaching Center to the Berks RISE Recovery Center + showing that recovery is possible.  WFMZ-TV
  • Hannah's Hope Ministries raised funds at the Building Hope Gala in Berks to support mothers and children in need—organizers say the money will boost housing, finances and emotional support as 80 percent of residents move on to independent living each year. CULTURE NEWS

  • The Fall Festival of the Arts will show the play 'Our Class' at Christ Episcopal Church in downtown Reading on Sept 28 at 3 p.m.—it will be a staged reading directed by John Gancar with 10 local veteran actors. The play tells the story of 10 students caught up in a 1941 massacre in Jedwabne and shows how their lives were changed by the war.  Reading Eagle

  • Today, Berks County published public records of real estate transactions on Sept. 21 that show various sales, with some deeds listing a sale price and others noting a $1 transfer when no money was exchanged — all details come from a recorder-created file.   • During Friday night games, Muhlenberg stayed unbeaten with a 35-17 win over Gov Mifflin as Michael Miller scored three different touchdowns from separate plays. Wilson beat Cedar Crest 62-20, Exeter defeated Lebanon 64-6, and Penn Manor won 41-8, with Wilson coach Doug Dahms earning his 200th win.  Reading Eagle
  • Hamburg edged out Kutztown 21—20 in a thrilling Section 5 game Friday night as the team overcame an early deficit; freshman quarterback Isaac McFadden threw the game-winning touchdown in the final minutes. The win showed Hamburg's resilience in a closely contested contest.  Reading Eagle
  • The Wyomissing Spartans defeated Elco 42 to 7 on Saturday at Bob Wolfrum Field in a Lancaster—Lebanon Section 4 game to improve their record to 5 to 0. Key scores from Justice Hardy and Chase Eisenhower helped the team stay undefeated at midseason.  Reading Eagle
