COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A new CatLounge has opened in the former B and D Upholstery shop at 1452 Friedensburg Road in Pennside—providing a relaxed indoor space for cat adoptions and community events. The grand opening will be held on Oct. 18 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. as volunteers and donations support its operations.  Reading Eagle

CULTURE NEWS

  • A series of concerts are set for the week starting today—Andy Summers will perform at Sellersville Theater 1894, Slayer will headline at Hersheypark Stadium on Saturday, and ZZ Top will play at Wind Creek Event Center on Sunday. Other shows include Mirador at The Theatre of Living Arts on Saturday, Joelton Mayfield at Kung Fu Necktie, Dark Angel at Capital City Music Hall on Wednesday, and Fat Dog at Warehouse on Watts.  Reading Eagle
  • Local singer-songwriter Steve Brosky faces fundraising hurdles for his biopic due to health setbacks—friends will hold an Evening of Stars fundraiser Sunday from 3-7 p.m. at the Ice House in Bethlehem to raise ticket revenue for filming that will begin September 27 at Blue Marsh Lake in Reading and continue in Allentown and Lehighton until the end of the year.  WFMZ-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On September 17th, 2025, the Berks County Intermediate Unit dedicated its new Learning Center at Helping Harvest Annex to boost early childhood education in Reading’s 6th Ward — over 100 community members attended the ceremony that honored late Cindy Boscov’s legacy and recognized local leaders and donors. Guests toured classrooms, an outdoor play area and offices that will serve as a hub for education and family support.  Berks Weekly

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Reading has been awarded a $250,000 planning grant from the Municipal Investment Fund to support energy-efficient renovations and community revitalization through its partnership with the Green Building Alliance—city officials say the funds will help guide businesses, schools and property owners in making sustainable upgrades. The grant will be used to develop user-friendly guides and tool kits to prepare Reading for future investment and energy savings.  Reading Eagle
  • Reading City Council is considering a zoning amendment to control short-term rentals like Airbnb and Vrbo. The new rule would let operators get permits in commercial districts while owners in low-density areas must seek variances—an estimated 25 to 40 unregulated units are involved—and a public hearing is set for Sept. 22.  Reading Eagle
  • Curbside leaf collection in Reading will start Oct. 13 when crews pick up loose leaves from several areas. Residents must rake leaves to the curb or put bagged leaves in biodegradable paper bags, with bagged collection scheduled on yard waste days until Dec. 5.  Reading Eagle
  • State police in Reading will enforce child passenger safety laws during National Child Passenger Safety Week by offering free car seat checks at the Reading station — 600 Kenhorst Blvd — from Sunday through Friday. Troopers will provide inspections without an appointment at set times: Sunday 7:00 a.m.—2:30 p.m., Monday 6:00 a.m.—6:30 p.m., Tuesday 2:00 p.m.—5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 24 10:00 a.m.—9:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 25 10:00 a.m.—9:30 p.m., and Friday 10:00 a.m.—2:00 p.m.  Reading Eagle

HEALTH NEWS

  • Reading Hospital is hosting a free event called 'Let's Talk, Mammograms' at the GoggleWorks in Reading on Sept. 23 from 4:30 to 8 p.m. The event offers mocktails, activities, and a panel discussion with state Rep. Johanny Cepeda-Freytiz and hospital experts—attendees can also schedule a mammogram.  Reading Eagle
  • Today, the Animal Rescue League of Berks County hosted a low-cost rabies vaccine clinic in Wyomissing — offering vaccines at $20 to $30 in response to a recent confirmed case — and is planning another clinic in Shillington.  WFMZ-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Wednesday, Schuylkill Valley won 5-1 in girls soccer as Bailey Pekuri scored three goals and other players helped secure the win. Exeter beat Reading High 10-0, Conrad Weiser won 8-0, Tulpehocken beat Kutztown 1-0, and Wyomissing won 4-1 — marking a busy day in the sport.  Reading Eagle
  • On September 17, Wilson’s field hockey team won 6-0 over Muhlenberg with Lizzy Long scoring two goals while girls tennis saw Exeter beat Reading 7-0 and Daniel Boone win 7-0 over Reading High; in girls volleyball, Exeter, Schuylkill Valley and Conrad Weiser also earned clear wins—demonstrating strong performances across Berks high school sports.  Reading Eagle
  • Felix Reyes was promoted this week to Triple-A with the IronPigs—he had a strong season at Double-A Reading, batting .338 and reaching career highs while learning new adjustments during winter ball, and he plans to keep improving his game.  Reading Eagle
