COMMUNITY NEWS

  • President Kevin Bieber invites everyone to the 78th annual Oley Valley Community Fair on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, where fairgoers will see over 7,000 competitive exhibits and enjoy new restrooms installed with help from the Oley Fire Company. The event brings the community together—volunteers and local businesses all unite to make the fair a success.  Reading Eagle
  • Kemberly Soria, 26, from Reading became the youngest executive director for two cemeteries—Gethsemane and St. Mary’s—as she replaces longtime director Timothy Kolasa and plans to grow community outreach and educational efforts on funeral pre-planning. Her work as a receptionist and assistant prepared her for this new role.  Reading Eagle
  • On Monday, Hope Rescue Mission welcomed Little Caesars Love Kitchen to its campus as the mobile pizzeria served free pizza to about 150 guests experiencing homelessness in Berks County — the event brought local franchise owners and volunteers together to offer support and encouragement.  Berks Weekly

  • Centro Hispano hosted a Connect — Inspire event that linked Hispanic entrepreneurs including Frael Reynoso and Rosemary Marmolejos of Mama’s Sofrito to share ideas and build businesses. CULTURE NEWS

  • Reading City Hall will host a photography reception and exhibition on Friday, September 19 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. to celebrate local artists who captured the city’s spirit and landscapes — the free event offers guests a chance to meet the photographers and purchase their work.  Berks Weekly

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. Kunal Das at Kutztown University has received a continuation patent to build on his unique method for sensing rotation and magnetic fields using localization—his new invention may lead to sensor designs and company partnerships.  Berks Weekly

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Reading Social Security field office at 201 Penn St. is closed because of facility issues and rising temperatures, and those needing in-person help will be directed to another location while phone service remains available (1-866-274-5960).  WFMZ-TV
  • Reading City Council approved changes to the animal control ordinance to strengthen rules on aggressive dogs and align local enforcement with Pennsylvania law. The updates require aggressive dogs to be confined with a warning sign or secured with a muzzle and a 3-foot chain—violations now result in fines of $500 to $1,000 and require owners to register their animals.  Reading Eagle
  • Berks County emergency officials urge residents to prepare a three-day kit of food, water, and medicines — guidance from the Pennsylvania Emergency Preparedness Guide comes as floods, ice storms, and outages become more severe. They advise families to check supplies and update plans now so they can be self-sufficient until help arrives.  WFMZ-TV
  • Green Building Alliance, Schneider Electric and the City of Reading Public Works Department will host a free public session on the Guaranteed Energy Savings Act project on October 14 from 2 to 4 p.m. at 815 Washington Street, second floor—local public sector professionals will learn about project design strategies and tools aimed at moving Reading toward a renewable energy goal by 2050.  Berks Weekly

  • On Monday, Daniel Boone edged Reading High 2-0 while Wilson defeated Gov.-Mifflin 8-1 in division matchups. Oley Valley won 4-1 over Twin Valley, Berks Catholic bested Tulpehocken 4-0, East Pennsboro edged Conrad Weiser 3-2, Schuylkill Valley overcame Brandywine Heights 3-2, and Exeter beat Muhlenberg 6-0 in field hockey games.  Reading Eagle
