  • The City of Reading hosted its fourth annual 6th Ward Block Party on Saturday afternoon featuring an art dedication that marked a tradition of local celebration.  WFMZ-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Manufacturers Resource Center announced board appointment for Harry Ciavarella — a regional lending manager at Tompkins Community Bank — to its finance committee, and Barclay Friends named Patricia 'Patti' Knowles — an expert in senior services — as director of resident engagement. Barley Snyder attorneys Kevin C. Myhre and John 'J.' Quain were also honored on the Forty Under 40 list, with the awards set for Oct. 27.  Reading Eagle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Reading native Wanda Colon Hart directs LoveNotes—a stage production of real love stories—in a one-night show on Oct.11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Miller Center for the Arts while the Reading Public Museum opens two exhibits, The Pigeon Comes to Reading! running Sept.20 to Jan.4 and Dressing the Abbey running Sept.27 to Jan.18. The Reading Symphony Orchestra also opens its season on Sept.27 at the Santander Performing Arts Center with a performance of Beethoven’s Ninth.  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Berks County resident Joshua Caltagirone announced his run for state representative in the 126th district and will seek election in 2026 — he will support unions, reproductive rights, tax reforms, common-sense gun laws, and investments in education while promising to work for the community with care and dedication.  Berks Weekly
  • PennDOT announced road projects across Berks County starting Monday, September 15 that will bring lane restrictions, closures and detours in West Reading, Bern Township, Upper Bern Township, Centre Township, Leesport Borough, Greenwich Township, Longswamp Township and Maxatawny Township. Motorists should plan for delays with overnight work on U.S. 422 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. and daytime work on PA 183, PA 61, Irish Creek Road, the interstate ramp at Exit 40 and Centennial Road—rain may delay some work.  Berks Weekly

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture released updated inspection reports for several Berks County food facilities—one report noted that New Jerusalem Inn & Event Center was found with excessive fruit fly activity in the bar area and was directed to improve cleaning practices to reduce pest issues.  Berks Weekly
  • Dermatology Partners announced it will open a Kutztown office tomorrow at 15050 Kutztown Road on the first floor in Maxatawny Township, led by Alan Himmelsbach who is a board-certified nurse practitioner with 20+ years of experience in dermatology and emergency care. The new office will allow patients to receive high-quality skin care close to home.  Reading Eagle

  • Today, the Berks County recorder’s office posted many real estate transactions from several townships—some with no sale price and a range of amounts from nominal to over a million dollars. These publicly available records include transfers in Reading and other areas for Sept. 14.  Reading Eagle

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Friday night, Schuylkill Valley rallied for a 35 to 28 win over Kutztown while Berks Catholic shut out Pequea Valley 41 to 0, Annville Cleona beat Hamburg 42 to 0, and Columbia beat Lancaster Catholic 43 to 0. The league will play more games on Friday, Sept. 19—matchups include Hamburg at Kutztown, Pequea Valley at Schuylkill Valley, Lancaster Catholic at Berks Catholic, and Annville Cleona at Columbia.  Reading Eagle
  • Penn State Berks Athletics received its largest donation as the Berkel family gave $100,000 and an additional $200,000 for scholarships—helping to update athletic facilities and support student athletes. The funds will boost equipment upgrades and improve programs across campus.  Berks Weekly
  • On Friday night, Wyomissing won 42 to 0 against Northern Lebanon while Twin Valley and Octorara posted wins of 60 to 0 and 42 to 28 respectively, each with standout plays from their key players. Wyomissing will host Elco next Saturday—Twin Valley will play Octorara on Thursday and Daniel Boone will face Lampeter-Strasburg next Friday.  Reading Eagle
  • On Friday, Nazareth beat Freedom at Bethlehem Area School District Stadium as star quarterback Peyton Falzone broke his clavicle on his left shoulder early in the game. Backup Cooper Madson stepped in + the team maintained their momentum while Falzone is scheduled to see doctors on Monday to begin his healing process.  Reading Eagle
