COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A fire on North Fifth Street left 40 people with nothing last week and local residents—business owners and fire stations alike—have rallied by donating supplies, gift cards, and even housing to help the displaced. Community donors continue to support the effort as relief centers at City Hall remain open for further contributions.  WFMZ-TV
  • Giant Company donated $35,000 on Sept. 9 and employees volunteered at Helping Harvest Fresh Food Bank in Spring Township—supporting Hunger Action Month, while Land O’Lakes provided 40,000 pounds of macaroni and cheese to feed local families.  Reading Eagle

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Aiden Burkholder, 78, was pinned against a tree by a compact loader on his farm (100 block of Mine Road, Richmond Township) Monday morning and was pronounced dead at 10:05 a.m. after sustaining crushing chest injuries.  Reading Eagle

CRIME NEWS

  • Montgomery County man Mohammed Zeidan from East Greenville was convicted on Sept. 5 for robbery and firearms conspiracy after he took part in a home-invasion robbery in Berks and Schuylkill counties—he was linked to a motorcycle club whose president recruited members for these crimes.  Reading Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A study by Penn Environment shows that putting solar panels on school roofs in Berks could save nearly $12 million over 30 years—cutting pollution by about 9,800 tons. Exeter School District will soon install panels at Owatin Creek Elementary School to supply 40% of its power and ease rising energy costs.  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Exeter Township’s board appointed Judey Kamora as its new supervisor to fill George Bell’s vacancy until Dec. 31—Kamora, a Penske Truck Leasing project manager, said she will work to rebuild trust with local residents.  Reading Eagle

SPORTS NEWS

  • Exeter defeated Twin Valley 5-0 in the BCIAA Division 2 girls soccer match on Monday—Chayse Floyd scored twice with help from Aubrey Ridge, Mackenzie Mentzer, and Madeline McAuliffe. Hamburg beat Fleetwood 2-1 in a Division 3 match—Madeline Wilkes and Ella Brindle scored, and Wilson won 5-0 over Reading High.  Reading Eagle
