- ➤ On Monday, Mayor Eddie Morán hosted a Fire Victim Support Drive at the DoubleTree in Reading from 3 to 6 p.m.—he worked with partners including Boscov’s and the Reading School District to support nearly 40 families displaced by last week’s massive apartment building fire on North 5th Street. - ➤ An elderly man died this morning after being trapped in machinery during a farm accident in Richmond Township at the 100 block of Mine Road—emergency crews and the coroner responded. WFMZ-TV
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ LaFaver Family Farm is set to expand with a new steer barn that will house 80 cattle during winter—funded by a low-interest $180,000 PA Catalyst loan from the Greater Berks Development Fund. The family farm, known for its non-GMO, grass-fed beef and growing local presence, plans to boost production to meet rising demand. Reading Eagle

- ➤ State troopers arrested two men after a controlled delivery on a Reading porch intercepted a package containing 6 1/2 pounds of cocaine shipped from Puerto Rico—both were taken into custody with bail set at $150,000 and $5,000. Reading Eagle
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Reading’s new City Revitalization and Improvement Zone will channel state and local taxes from a 130-acre downtown area into projects to restore dilapidated buildings and spur economic growth. The CRIZ board—nominated by the mayor, a state rep, and a state senator—will start accepting developer applications by the end of the year if pitches meet the guidelines. Berks Weekly
- ➤ The Reading City Council approved a $1.2 million grant application from the Main Street Matters program to fund facade improvements on Penn Street and business support on North Fifth Street—this proposal requires city matching funds and may lead to plans for a new downtown improvement structure.
