  • Hope Rescue Mission held its annual Hope Gala Saturday night in Reading as community leaders—partners and friends gathered to celebrate a year of service and raise funds for its programs. The event will support future initiatives including a November 5k to benefit homeless veteran services.  WFMZ-TV
  • North Star Initiative hosted a walk on Saturday in Berks County to raise awareness about human trafficking and empower survivors—drawing about 60 community members. CEO Melinda Clark said the group wants to end trafficking by urging neighbors to stand together against this ongoing issue.  WFMZ-TV

  • Cumru Township police are seeking tips on a man who used a counterfeit North Carolina ID to fraudulently withdraw funds from a victim's account at First National Bank on Aug. 22—call 610-655-4911 with any information.  Reading Eagle

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Saturday at the Chile Pepper Food Festival in Berks County, Jeremy won the jalapeno-eating contest by eating three and a half peppers—he has loved chili peppers since he was a kid and now claims his first victory in the contest.  WFMZ-TV
  • Adam Void has been appointed as the new executive director at the WCR Center for the Arts. The Reading native brings extensive experience in performing arts and nonprofit leadership — he plans to expand community partnerships as the center launches its new season.  Reading Eagle

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A pop-up farmers market debuted in Berks County on Saturday—organized by the Berks County Heritage Center and the Department of Agriculture to revive Heritage Day and support local farmers. Organizers also introduced a food map listing over 260 sites to help residents shop locally.  WFMZ-TV

  • Berks County real estate transactions were recorded today—some deeds do not list a price because no money was exchanged. The records from the recorder of deeds office cover various property sales and transfers throughout the county.  Reading Eagle
