- ➤ The Wyomissing Library will hold a free session on elder scams and estate planning on Sept. 8 from 10 a.m. until noon — experts from the PA Attorney General’s office and Reading-based Curran Estate & Elder Law will lead the event. ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ An overnight fire in Reading damaged three rowhomes on North Fifth Street around 1 a.m. Wednesday, displacing over a dozen residents and injuring two people—one rowhome lost its two upper floors. WFMZ-TV
- ➤ A three-alarm fire in downtown Reading left dozens displaced and one person hospitalized while fire crews battled hotspots throughout the day—investigators are examining explosion-like sounds and severe roof damage in the affected apartments. WFMZ-TV
- ➤ One person was taken to the hospital with burn injuries after a fire tore through two Reading apartment buildings shortly after 1 a.m. Wednesday—dozens of residents were displaced as firefighters worked to control the blaze and investigators began looking into its cause. WFMZ-TV
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Albright College and Alvernia University contribute over $303 million to the local economy and create more than 2,400 jobs in the Reading region, a report by AICUP and Parker Strategy Group finds. The study shows the two nonprofit institutions drive spending, payroll, and tax revenue—bringing direct and indirect job opportunities to the area. Alvernia University
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A new study by PennEnvironment Research—Policy Center shows that Berks County schools could save nearly $12 million and reduce harmful climate pollution by about 9,800 tons by using solar energy. The report finds that solar panels can generate enough power for almost 7,500 homes while also lowering other air pollutants. Berks Weekly
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ City Council reviewed the inactive sidewalk repair grant program that helped homeowners fix broken sidewalks in past years but paused it this year because of staffing shortages. Officials said they will ask for $1 million in the 2026 budget to fund repairs for about 90 properties while discussing changes to include renters and cost sharing — with priority for seniors and disabled residents.
