BUSINESS NEWS

  • East Penn Manufacturing confirmed it leased a massive 930,000 square-foot warehouse under construction in Maidencreek Township off Route 222 and Evansville Road—where it will transition employees from its Berks and Lehigh County locations to the new facility.  WFMZ-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • On August 21, Reading police found the decomposing body of 22-year-old Guerby Aspervil in a second-floor bedroom on Buttonwood Street after a foul odor was reported, and 21-year-old Alexis Williams—who lived with Aspervil—is charged with criminal homicide with a preliminary hearing set for September 12.  WFMZ-TV
  • A Labor Day shooting occurred on Monday at an apartment complex in Exeter—police responded at 1:30 p.m. to reports of gunfire—and a male victim underwent surgery while an adult male suspect surrendered and awaits further action as no charges have been decided, according to the district attorney.  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Reading’s request to fully demolish the building at 441 Penn St. in the Callowhill Historic District faces a setback — the Historical Architectural Review Board denied the request because the city did not prove financial hardship. City officials said they may file a new application or appeal to City Council while cautioning that delays in repairing the deteriorated façade could increase public safety risks as winter approaches.  Reading Eagle
  • Reading City Council voted to use eminent domain to take the 0.35 acre property at 2040 Centre Ave next to FirstEnergy Stadium from Nikhilkumar Patel’s estate as the city confirms his death and will set compensation by agreement or in court. The council also shifted $525,000 in the police budget to fund the renewed Axon body-worn camera contract—ensuring camera coverage even though some training sessions are postponed until next year.  Reading Eagle

SPORTS NEWS

  • The IronPigs rallied from a three-run deficit and scored 10 straight runs to win 10-3 over the Toledo Mud Hens, keeping their International League playoff hopes alive. Cindy Jakoby of Barto was honored as the team’s 10,000,000th fan—receiving season tickets during the game.  Reading Eagle
  • Wyomissing moved up one spot to fourth in Class 4A after winning a close 29-26 game against The Haverford School on Saturday. Twin Valley also entered the top ten with a strong 2-0 start, and both teams showed promising play in their early games.  Reading Eagle
