BUSINESS NEWS

  • Construction is underway on a 930,000-square-foot warehouse at Schaeffer Road and Route 222 in Maidencreek Township following a conditional use approval last December. Residents opposed the project for its potential to lower property values, harm the environment and add noise, light and traffic — and the building is expected to be completed by March.  Reading Eagle

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry released July job data showing that the Philadelphia area’s unemployment rate rose slightly to 4.2% while Berks County’s rate stayed at 4.1%, a figure higher than last July. Total nonfarm jobs in Philadelphia increased by 7,200 from June to reach a record high, and jobs in Reading remained steady yet grew by 2,300 over last year—indicating mixed trends in regional employment.  Reading Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Berks Catholic High School will induct eight former student-athletes from Central Catholic, Holy Name, and Reading Catholic into its Hall of Fame at a ceremony on Sept. 5 at 6 p.m. at the Franco-Post Auditorium—each inductee is recognized for their notable achievements in sports during high school.  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Reading couple on North 12th Street urged City Council to crack down on loud music that disrupts their family’s rest, as repeated police calls have failed to permanently quiet the noise. Council members discussed increasing fines to $1,000—while noting that low police staffing complicates enforcement of the noise ordinance.  Reading Eagle
  • The West Reading Police Department today launched CrimeWatch Labs—an interactive crime mapping tool that shows residents reported incidents in general areas to keep privacy intact. The department will also share a Monthly Activity Report that details patrols, security checks, and other law enforcement actions to strengthen community safety.  Berks Weekly
  • The 1858 depot at Sinking Spring Heritage Park was demolished after a March fire caused by squirrels chewing wires combined with termite and water damage made restoration impossible. Borough officials plan to build a new structure that resembles the original depot but includes modern upgrades to meet ADA and code requirements.  Reading Eagle
  • West Reading officials announced that nighttime paving projects will start Sept.2 at 7 p.m. and finish within one week, weather permitting—residents must remove their cars a day in advance to avoid tickets or towing.  Reading Eagle

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Berks County West Nile Virus Program will spray to control adult mosquitoes in Reading on Sept. 3 starting about 7:15 p.m. in City Park—covering Bear Park, Laurel Street Park, Goggleworks Gardens, Charles Evans Cemetery, and 11th and Union streets to reduce virus risks. Residents in these areas are advised to remain indoors during spraying as weather conditions may delay the operation.  Reading Eagle

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Thursday night, Conrad Weiser beat Elco 28-14 as Javien Rivera rushed for 108 yards and scored two touchdowns—Owen Kerns returned an interception for a touchdown while Schuylkill Valley won 42-0 over Daniel Boone with five touchdown passes from Alex Aletras. Berks Catholic won 45-20 over Executive Education Academy as Aiden Curley and Xavier Gerald each ran for over 100 yards.  Reading Eagle
  • Friday night high school football games in Berks County showed Muhlenberg leading Reading High 21-0 and Twin Valley up 21-0 over Selinsgrove. Cameron Small scored three touchdowns for Muhlenberg — boosting his team's early play and setting a strong tone for the game.  Reading Eagle
