GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new welcome sign with images of the Pagoda and a Reading Railroad engine now greets drivers on Route 422 westbound at the busy Penn Street exit—replacing a sign destroyed in May 2023. City officials awarded a $78,458 contract to Signature Sign and said the sign was installed Wednesday.  Reading Eagle
  • The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission announced it will begin a $3 million restoration project at the Daniel Boone Homestead lake in Exeter Township to dredge the lake, install a sediment trap, repair the dam and spillway, and replace the pedestrian bridge—work is expected to finish next summer with restricted visitor access for safety.  Reading Eagle
  • Berks County Commissioners voted to appoint Laura Jones as Interim Chief Financial Officer effective Sept. 1—she will earn $142,719 annually and replace longtime CFO Robert Patrizio, who will retire at year’s end. The commissioners also authorized a letter to Governor Shapiro and the Legislature urging them to pass a state budget that will ensure fiscal stability for the county and local services.  WFMZ-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Monday, about 40 people gathered in City Park for a flag-raising ceremony to recognize International Overdose Awareness Day as city officials and members of the SOS Berks Opioid Coalition spoke about the opioid crisis and support for recovery—while the flag is set to fly for seven days.  Reading Eagle

SPORTS NEWS

  • Walker Hallman scored the only goal as Daniel Boone beat Lampeter-Strasburg 1-0 in a non-league match on August 27—goalies Cooper Robison and Carter Echternach made 4 and 11 saves respectively. Other boys high school soccer games ended with varied results—Reading High lost 2-1 to Manheim Township while teams like Oley Valley and Lancaster Catholic won.  Reading Eagle
