- ➤ Residents met at City Park on Tuesday to discuss a proposed $800,000 ice rink that would offer seasonal events and recreation for kids and seniors—while some stressed the need to protect the park’s green space and manage concerns such as noise, trash, and parking. Reading Eagle
- ➤ El-Jon Farms in Oley Township earned centennial farm honors from the state after being owned by the same family since March 30th, 1912— the farm grows corn, beans, wheat and hay on 137 acres with its original bank barn still used. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A new state report shows Berks County had 1,186 child abuse reports last year with 122 cases confirmed, including repeated abuse for 10 children and 2 child deaths. The report says most cases were neglect with over 40% involving sexual abuse and nearly 72% of confirmed victims being girls—state officials call for more support to prevent abuse. WFMZ-TV
- ➤ Police said a man was shot in the leg after an argument over alleged drug dealing at an apartment building on S. 5th Street yesterday—Benjamin Rivera was later detained when police found a handgun and drugs. WFMZ-TV
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ The new supermarket, Super Natural and Fresh Produce III, opened in Reading yesterday with a ribbon-cutting held by Finanta and store operator Leopoldo Sanchez—this 43,000-square-foot store will sell fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy and Latino foods while hosting a cafe, a warehouse for local shops and plans for a tortilla factory, and it is expected to serve 5,900 customers a week and create 150 jobs. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ State officials invested more than $8.8 million to buy development rights for 2,017 acres on 33 farms across 16 counties, including five in Berks County—keeping the land from future residential or commercial development. The state funded $815,771 and the county contributed $332,150 to secure these farms. Reading Eagle
