- ➤ On Aug. 25, officials broke ground on a $1.4 million upgrade for the Oakbrook Homes baseball field in Reading, adding dugouts, an announcers booth, and picnic areas while improving lighting, fencing, and walking paths—an effort funded entirely by community development block grants that marks the final phase of Oakbrook Homes revitalization. Mayor Eddie Moran said the project will give families a safe space to gather and create lasting memories. Reading Eagle

- ➤ On Aug. 19, 7 Brew coffee opened its second drive-thru location at 3045 N. Fifth Street Highway in Muhlenberg Township where owners Travis and Cortney Odom held a ribbon-cutting that raised over $7,000 for Helping Harvest. The 510-square-foot stand employed more than 80 workers and plans to open more locations in Pennsylvania later this year — a sign of the franchise's continued growth. Reading Eagle

- ➤ A Reading man was charged with aggravated assault—police said he pistol-whipped his ex-girlfriend during an argument over the weekend at her apartment, leaving her with a head injury and bleeding while her three children were present. Reading Eagle

- ➤ Reading Public Museum is hosting Retro Replay: A 21+ Night at TOYTOPIA — an after-hours event that lets adults explore interactive toy exhibits like Battleship and classic arcade games on Friday, Aug. 29 from 6 to 9 p.m. Reading Eagle
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Opportunity House has launched the Patton Avenue Learning Center in Oakbrook to offer affordable, quality early childhood education for up to 65 children from 6 weeks through kindergarten. The center, a collaboration with Reading Housing Authority led by local expert Yessenia Vasquez, will operate Monday through Friday (6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.) and aims to earn a Keystone STARS 4 rating. - ➤ Reading native Dr. James Edinger and his wife, Gail Lott, donated their $8 million Hilton Head home + a collection of rare art to Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine to fund scholarships, grounds maintenance and nutrition programs that will help medical students serve rural and underserved areas. The gift is the largest in the college's history and shows the couple's lifelong habit of wise saving. Reading Eagle
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Deer hunting returns to Mount Penn and Antietam Lake Park this fall as local officials allow a controlled archery hunt by licensed hunters. The season starts on Sept. 20 and runs until Jan. 24 — hunting is allowed only on Sundays from 30 minutes before sunrise until 30 minutes after sunset. Reading Eagle

- ➤ Pennsylvanians will vote on November 4 for local finance roles such as tax collector, auditor and controller. The positions have different duties and rules let some towns hire an independent accountant if needed—helping local leaders manage money safely. Berks Weekly
- ➤ Wyomissing Borough fired a police officer known as badge 29, later revealed as Rubiel Estevez, who settled a false arrest case for $500,000. An expert said officials violated the state Sunshine Act by not naming him at the time of termination—officials have not explained the decision. WFMZ-TV
