- ➤ The Berks County Coalition to End Homelessness released winter counts from January and summer counts from June showing 682 people in January and 677 in June, with unsheltered numbers rising from 179 to 257. Elise McCauley said a lack of affordable housing & high rental costs are worsening the issue as local shelters remain nearly full. Reading Eagle
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Muhlenberg Township man Byron Boyd was arrested on drug trafficking charges when police raided his home before dawn and seized 242 packets of crack cocaine, drug packaging material, three handguns, and $890 as part of an ongoing investigation that began in November—linking his sales in his home and Reading. Reading Eagle
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Reading officials rescheduled the meeting to discuss plans for a public ice-skating rink from the original site at Third at Spruce Streets due to inclement weather and community concerns. The meeting will be held on Aug. 26 at 5 p.m. at City Park near Walnut Street and Locust Street where residents can ask questions and provide feedback. Reading Eagle
- ➤ Reading City Council is considering using eminent domain to take over a 0.35-acre parcel next to FirstEnergy Stadium—located at 2040 Centre Ave—for public purposes. If the council votes in favor, Mayor Eddie Moran will sign the declaration and attorney Edwin L. Stock will handle court filings while owner Nikhilkumar Patel may challenge the taking or seek additional compensation. Reading Eagle
- ➤ A meeting to gather input on plans for a new public ice-skating rink has been rescheduled due to expected bad weather and will take place Tuesday, August 26 at 5 p.m. at City Park on the Walnut Street side near Locust Street – those unable to attend in person can watch online. WFMZ-TV
