COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 32nd annual Ride for Freedom will roll through Berks County on Sunday as riders honor POWs and missing military personnel, starting at Fifth and Franklin in Womelsdorf at 11:30 a.m. and ending at City Park in Reading where a remembrance ceremony will be held—participants from Oley may join at 9:30 a.m.  Reading Eagle
  • Every Tuesday night, Anita Evans works with volunteers at Hope's Table in the basement kitchen of Hope Lutheran Church to serve meals to local residents in Reading. The group now faces a problem with electricity and is asking for donations to help fix the lights.  WFMZ-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Teachers and staff from Reading School District gathered at FirstEnergy Stadium less than a week before the new school year starts. The event provided health resources and food trucks—preparing educators for a smooth transition into the school year.  WFMZ-TV
  • Fifty-three students finished Mayor Eddie Moran’s summer youth program on Monday, Aug. 18—they received 20 hours a week of hands-on technical and job training over eight weeks at the Hispanic Center’s Casa De La Amistad Event Center at 25 N. Second St.  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission will host its annual Be Wise consumer education conference in Reading on October 20 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the DoubleTree by Hilton—local human service professionals and community advocates will join expert panels and network to share tools and resources to support vulnerable households.  Berks Weekly
  • Reading City Council has reallocated nearly $1 million in federal funds (990,250) from a delayed sidewalk project to fund playground and baseball field upgrades at Oakbrook Homes (1001 Scott St.). Officials said the project will begin soon as they prepare improved athletic facilities and outdoor spaces for residents.  Reading Eagle

HEALTH NEWS

  • Consumers were warned to discard raw milk from Sunshine Dairy in Bethel after tests confirmed Listeria monocytogenes contamination in milk sold from Aug 5 to 15 in Berks, Schuylkill and Lebanon counties—officials say anyone who consumed it and develops symptoms should consult a doctor.  Reading Eagle

  • Daniel Boone high school girls tennis team opened its season with a 7 to 0 win over Upper Perkiomen on Monday as Sarah Shank, Victoria Ortiz and Puttavan Inthaphone each earned straight set wins—doubles teams also secured victories.  Reading Eagle
