  • Kids in Reading got free school supplies at Hope Rescue Mission's student event Saturday — over 24 groups donated backpacks, clothes, and snacks to help families in need.  WFMZ-TV
  • The 7th annual West Reading French Fry Festival on Aug. 16 drew thousands of local residents to Penn Avenue where dozens of food trucks and tents served inventive fry dishes including duck fat fries and loaded shoestrings—an event that many families enjoyed exploring.  Reading Eagle

  • Berks County Community Foundation hired Jen Heydt as its new communication manager effective July 8, and Tompkins Financial Advisors named David Bolger as managing director for its southeastern region—D&S Elite Construction Inc. hired five new team members for key construction roles—a move that strengthens local business leadership.  Reading Eagle

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Reading Theater Project announced a new season themed Embracing Our Humanity that opens with the play Proud by Judd Lear Silverman at the WCR Center for the Arts from Nov. 7 to 9 and from Nov. 14 to 16 while hosting a 5-Minute Fringe Festival from Feb. 27 through March 16 and a play reading series with local playwright submissions due by Sept. 30 and auditions on Saturday at 3 p.m. In related arts news, Reading Civic Theatre will perform A Cabaret of Favorites on Sept. 12, 13, and 14, Susan L. Pena will hold a book reading and signing event at Simply Bold Cafe on Saturday at 5:30 p.m., and the Reading Public Museum has acquired a rare painting by Tulie Speight.  Reading Eagle
