- ➤ The Youth Volunteer Corps of Reading will hold its 2nd Annual 5K Walk for Compassion on Sunday, Sept. 7 at Alvernia University as over 100 community members join a morning of service + registration opens at 9 a.m. at The PLEX with the walk beginning at 10 a.m. on a scenic route. Berks Weekly
- ➤ Family Promise of Berks County held its first Back-to-School Kickoff at Berks Lodge 47 on Walnut Street in Reading, where over 200 children received backpacks, school supplies, free haircuts, and local partners provided snow cones, food, and drinks—community resources were shared at several nonprofit booths. - ➤ On Friday—August 15, kids on the 600 block of Penn Street got free haircuts, new backpacks and school supplies at a back-to-school event hosted by Rep. Manny Guzman and Mayor Eddie Moran, who used their own childhood struggles to help support local students. Reading Eagle

- ➤ On May 4th, a Reading woman stole a purse from a Cumru Township restaurant on Lancaster Pike and reportedly attempted to use the victim’s cards for court fees and inmate phone payments—authorities later charged Kayleann Santana, 38, with theft, credit card fraud, and identity theft and jailed her on $15,000 bail ahead of an Aug. 10 arraignment. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ More than 50 students from the Mayor Eddie Moran Summer Youth Initiative and Alvernia EmpowerED Program gained hands-on work experience this summer and celebrated their progress at Alvernia's John R. Post Center. They worked on real projects and will continue their internships through Aug. 22—helping them build skills for future city jobs. Reading Eagle
- ➤ Reading School District officials toured the nearly finished Innovation Academy building on Aug. 15, where experts worked on the $77 million, four‐story structure at Ninth and Douglass streets that will host 1,000 high school students and offer innovation tracks in science and technology when it fully opens in 2026-27—initially serving as a professional development facility until construction is complete. - ➤ Local officials have opened bids for improvements to the Orwigsburg Veterans Community Memorial Hall with funding from a USDA rural development grant. The borough will also begin paving West Church Street later in August or in September—while approving upgrades to water, sewer and HVAC systems and preparing for upcoming community events.
