COMMUNITY NEWS

  • ➤ Berks Book Bonanza raised eighty thousand dollars from its recent sale, with forty thousand dollars allocated to Friends of Berks County Libraries and the local branch of the American Association of University Women. The organization will begin accepting donations for the next sale from Sept. 8 through Nov. 11 at Berks County South Campus in Mohnton—volunteers will manage the collection.  Reading Eagle

CRIME NEWS

  • ➤ A 20-year-old Reading man, William Gonzalez, faces attempted homicide charges after a fight outside a relative's home on Saturday led to a stabbing in which the victim was hit three times and taken to Reading Hospital—Gonzalez was detained with bail set at $500,000.  Reading Eagle
  • ➤ Muhlenberg Township authorities have charged 50-year-old Johany Melendez from The Bronx with multiple counts of making false statements after he admitted to buying five guns in Berks County and planning to ship them to the Dominican Republic for resale—earning him over $4,500—while he remains in custody at Berks County Jail on $5,000 bail.  WFMZ-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • ➤ Reading has identified a potential site for an ice-skating rink in City Park (near 11th and Walnut) after stopping construction near the Roberto Clemente memorial due to neighbor concerns. City officials said they will hold a community meeting soon to discuss costs and future plans for off-season activities.  WFMZ-TV
  • ➤ The Pennsylvania House passed the public transit legislation (HB 1788) on August 11; the bill, introduced by Rep. Sean Dougherty, would fund transit, roads and bridges (including SEPTA) across all 67 counties to help prevent service cuts and now awaits Senate action.  WFMZ-TV
  • ➤ State Sen. Judy Schwank sent a letter to Berkshire Mall owner Namdar Realty Group asking for details on repairs and plans as the property has deteriorated with sinkholes, roof damage and a closed food court. Wyomissing officials filed a court petition to force immediate fixes—concerns that impact the whole community.  Reading Eagle

HEALTH NEWS

  • ➤ The Berks County Veterans Affairs department now offers free mental health services for local veterans at the Etchberger Veterans Service Center in Spring Township—services include licensed therapy, nature connection walks and support groups. Director Jay Ostrich says the program aims to ease PTSD symptoms and build a coalition of help for the county's 20,000 veterans.  Reading Eagle
