COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Families and community groups gathered at Riverfront Park on Saturday for the fourth annual RIVERZILLA Community Day and Park Cleanup along the Schuylkill River. The event offered a morning riverbank cleanup, free kayaking demos, trail bike loans, watershed education, crafts, food, and games for all ages — a day to care for Reading’s natural resources.  Reading Eagle

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle Friday afternoon in Wernersville when a westbound car left its lane and hit someone on the 100 block of West Penn Avenue at 1:06 p.m.—the victim suffered major injuries but is now stable at a local hospital while investigators work with state and local police.  Reading Eagle
  • Route 61 in Leesport is closed due to an accident that occurred Saturday, August 9 at about 1:45 a.m. on the 200 block of North Centre Avenue—utility poles and wires fell, and traffic is being detoured via Belleman’s Church Road and Route 73.  Reading Eagle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Candlelight returns to Berks County on Oct. 25 at St John's Lutheran Church, 4125 Penn Ave in Sinking Spring, where audiences will enjoy Candlelight: The Best of Hans Zimmer at 6 p.m. and a Halloween program starting at 8:30 p.m.—featuring classical pieces and film scores—designed to bring a unique multisensory live music experience to local fans.  Reading Eagle
  • United Church of Christ of Robesonia (301 W. Penn Ave.) holds its annual car show today (9 a.m.–3 p.m.) in the church parking lot with a rain date set for next Saturday; several nearby congregations also offer special events like community picnics and guest music performances.  Reading Eagle

HEALTH NEWS

  • Residents in Reading enjoyed a fun day at Berks Community Health Center on the final day of National Health Center week as bounce houses and dunk tanks entertained the crowd and raised awareness for local health services; the center celebrated its 12th year and operates four county locations+ showing its commitment to community health.  WFMZ-TV
  • Officials in Reading and Shillington reported mosquitoes tested positive for West Nile virus and urged residents to remove standing water and use insect repellent with at least 30% DEET (to lower bite risks). They said further mosquito control measures, including truck spray, may be needed if virus activity rises.  WFMZ-TV
  • Berks Community Health Center held a free health fair on Penn Street on Aug 9th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. as part of National Health Center Week to thank local residents by offering health screenings, refreshments, and kid activities along with booths from community partners.  Reading Eagle
