COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Helping Harvest Community Kitchen at the GoggleWorks Center in downtown Reading opened in late April — it has produced more than 8,000 meals and repackaged 6,000 bulk food units to help local families. The project raised almost $20 million from public and private partners and will soon offer culinary training and job reentry programs.  Reading Eagle
  • GRCA is accepting vendor applications for the second annual Go Taste Berks event, which will take place throughout November to celebrate local food, drink and retail. Businesses must register by Oct. 17 (those signing up by Sept. 5 will qualify for a video feature) to benefit from a digital passport program that will drive customer traffic.  Reading Eagle

CRIME NEWS

  • Three men face charges in Reading for a robbery on Aug. 1 when Andrew Colon chased a victim and shot him in the leg to steal his chain, Jose Morales-Ortiz used his gun to take a watch from a second victim, and Jason Albino punched another — bail is set at $300,000 for Colon and Morales-Ortiz and $250,000 for Albino while their court hearings are scheduled for Aug. 22.  WFMZ-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • A mosquito sample collected in Shillington tested positive for West Nile virus, borough officials said. The Berks County Conservation District will increase mosquito monitoring and may spray if virus activity rises (residents are advised to wear long sleeves and use bug spray).  Reading Eagle
