CULTURE NEWS

  • Residents can attend the annual Pennsylvania-German Farm Festival on Saturday, Aug. 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Dreibelbis Historic Farm in Virginville—featuring horse-drawn wagon rides, history demonstrations, reenactments, Native American displays, and food from local vendors. Admission is free—parking costs $3 while the farmhouse built in the 1860s offers a rare look at rural life in Berks County.  Berks Weekly

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Thirty-seven area high school and college students graduated from the Emerging Entrepreneurs Academy on Aug. 1 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel on Penn St.—the six-week program gave them classroom lessons and internships with local business owners to learn the ins and outs of running a business.  Reading Eagle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Reading will host a free water conservation roundtable on Aug. 12 from 2 to 4 p.m. at City Council Chambers as part of the Resilient Reading initiative, where experts Bill Murray and Bethany Ayers Fisher—water authority executive director and city sustainability manager—will discuss water leak detection and efficient water practices.  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A detour has been in effect since March 3 as PennDOT closes the 400 block of Schuylkill Avenue to replace its old three-span bridge so trains can carry stacked containers. The project—set to finish in fall 2026—has increased traffic on West Greenwich while repairs are made to fix potholes.  Reading Eagle
  • Reading’s Board of Ethics censured two board appointees and a former employee for not filing the required Supplemental Statement of Financial Interest forms. James Cole and Stephen V. Yarnell were fined $1,200 each, face a five-year ban from holding city office, and may be removed from their posts—Greg McCullough also faces a $1,200 fine and a five-year ban.  Reading Eagle
  • State Rep. Joe Ciresi passed a bill in the House on August 4 (108-95) that would require developers to put up signs at least nine square feet with 4-inch letters so residents can read them from 50 feet. The bill now goes to the Senate and aims to help locals know about new developments in their area.  Reading Eagle
  • PennDOT is inviting high school students from Berks, Carbon, Lehigh, Monroe, Northampton and Schuylkill counties to join its annual Paint the Plow program, where they will paint an original mural on a snowplow blade using the theme—'Don’t race. Allow some space'—to promote winter driving safety. School officials must submit an application as plow delivery and pick-up dates vary by county.  Reading Eagle
