- ➤ Mayor Eddie Morán and State Representative Manny Guzman will host the 4th Annual Back-to-School Giveaway in Reading on Aug. 15 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the courtyard on the 600 block of Penn Street, where families will get free school supplies, free haircuts from local barbers, and help from community organizations; free parking is available in the 6th and Cherry Street lot from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Berks Weekly

- ➤ 21-year-old Anthony Eddinger faces firearms charges—he is accused of providing false statements to buy two Glock 19 handguns from licensed dealers during a straw purchase investigation and remains free on $100,000 bail with a preliminary hearing set for August 27. WFMZ-TV

- ➤ The Berks History Center will offer Pennsylvania Dutch classes both in person at 940 Centre Ave + online via Zoom starting the week of Sept.15. The eight-week courses will conclude the week of Nov.3, with registration due by Sept.11 and fees set at $90 for center members and $175 for nonmembers. Reading Eagle

- ➤ Opportunity House has named Yessenia Vasquez as director and Emily Cumens as assistant director of its new Patton Avenue Learning Center at Oakbrook Homes—one of the largest public housing communities managed by the Reading Housing Authority. The center will provide early childhood education for children from 6 weeks to 5 years old Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.—supporting families in the neighborhood. Reading Eagle
- ➤ Jenna Martorana, a 30-year-old substitute school counselor from Wyomissing, was crowned Ms Collegiate USA on July 12. She will use her crown to mentor young women and share her personal experience with mental health issues—having authored three children’s books and worked with the National Alliance on Mental Illness—to encourage open discussion. - ➤ Reading City Council heard a request from the Reading Housing Authority to reallocate $990,250 in Community Development Block Grant funds to upgrade the Oakbrook playground and athletic field during its Committee of the Whole meeting Monday night — the proposal will be voted on next Monday after city officials recommended diverting funds from a delayed sidewalk project. - ➤ Gov. Josh Shapiro signed House Bill 1431 to lift the ban on Sunday hunting, and the Pennsylvania Game Commission will add 13 Sundays to fall hunting seasons starting September 14. The new law takes effect on September 7 — migratory game bird seasons remain unchanged. Reading Eagle
