COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Berks County readers met the goal to log 500,000 minutes of reading and helped sponsor Weebles (a 2-year-old pit bull) to find a forever home through the Pages for Pets program. Reading District Libraries and the Animal Rescue League of Berks County teamed up for this three-year initiative, which ended on July 25.  Reading Eagle
  • Reading will host a First Friday event on Aug. 1 from 5 to 9 p.m. along the 600 block of Penn Street that will feature live music by Orquesta Tropikal & DJ Houdini, art displays, family-friendly activities such as tie-dye and games, and local vendors offering food and services.  Reading Eagle

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Chef David’s Pizza & More is open at 500 Penn Ave in West Reading, serving breakfast, lunch, dinner and late-night meals until 3 a.m. and plans to operate 24/7 while also hosting a fundraiser on July 30 to benefit Wyomissing Police Sgt. Kevin Quinter — half the day’s proceeds will support his Race Across America effort.  Reading Eagle

CRIME NEWS

  • A father and daughter from Muhlenberg Township were charged with stabbing a man during a July 17 melee outside their home—25-year-old Dioviyon A. Williams was released on $10,000 bail and 50-year-old Shaquone Williams awaits arraignment on charges of aggravated and simple assault, disorderly conduct, and possessing an instrument of crime.  Reading Eagle
  • Amity Township police are asking residents for help identifying a suspect who broke into HillBilly BBQ between 4:40 and 5 a.m. Friday, entered a home through an unlocked window and attempted to break into Dollar General, and tipsters may receive a cash reward if their information leads to an arrest.  Reading Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • CCIU held its first Early Head Start Child Care Partnership Education Summit in Downingtown from July 22—July 23 to bring together childcare groups from five counties. The two-day event gave teachers new ideas through play-based activities and focused on building stronger support for families with young children.  Reading Eagle
  • Alvernia University’s O'Pake Institute and the City of Reading are offering summer internships to 25 high school students through the EmpowerED Program and Mayor Moran’s Summer Youth Program, giving them hands-on experience in marketing, community and economic development, finance and innovation until August 22. On July 24, more than 50 students attended a campus event with university officials and a Shark Tank-style exercise (including a campus tour and lunch) to learn about college and career opportunities.  Alvernia University

  • Berks County coroner is seeking relatives of Ejay Velez, 21, whose last known address was in the 1600 block of Cotton Street in Reading; she was pronounced dead Sunday in her residence and anyone with information is asked to call 610-478-3280.  Reading Eagle
  • Cumru Township Fire Department is constructing a 22,908-square-foot fire station next to the municipal building that will combine three aging stations, including five drive-thru bays and separate zones for clean and dirty areas + support its 24-hour firefighting staff. The $13.84 million project, delayed for eight years, is expected to be substantially completed in early December + provide improved facilities for both operations and safety.  Reading Eagle

  • Children's Hospital of Philadelphia now provides heart care for children at its new Reading location. The facility will help local families access expert treatment closer to home—improving timely care for young patients.  WFMZ-TV
